Essential Job Duties:
The Assistant Dean for Business and Administration serves as the Chief Business and Administrative Officer for the College of Design. This position carries management, advisory, and decision-making responsibilities across key areas, including: 1) Strategic Planning; 2) Finance and Budget; 3) Human Resources.
The Assistant Dean acts as a key advisor to the Dean and provides direct support to the Associate Dean, academic unit heads, and other college leadership. They serve as the primary liaison to the university regarding financial, human resources, and administrative operations.

Strategic Planning
- Collaborate with the College Administrative Council to develop and implement both short and long-term strategic and tactical plans.
- In consultation with the Dean, create financial strategies aligned with the College's Strategic Plan and funding sources.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the Dean, Associate Dean, and other academic/administrative leaders on budget planning and administrative operations.
- Research, produce, and present data to communicate financial and operational needs clearly and effectively.
- Identify and implement operational changes to support the College's mission.
- Represent the College on relevant university administrative and strategic committees.
Financial Management
- Oversee all financial operations of the College, including fiscal forecasting, budget development, and resource planning.
- Apply knowledge of university spending guidelines and funding sources to develop and maintain balanced budgets.
- Promote transparency in financial reporting to support informed decision-making and maximize resource use.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures and internal controls to ensure compliance and optimize the use of funds.
- Consult with and advise academic unit heads on financial planning and fiscal oversight.
- Represent the College on relevant university finance and operations committees.
- Exercise delegated authority to approve financial transactions, while maintaining internal control integrity.
- Supervise the College Budget Manager, delegating authority for day-to-day operations, month/year-end closeout, and staff management.
Human Resources Management
- Manage all human resources functions for the College, serving as the primary HR Liaison on behalf of the Dean.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of HR policies and procedures in areas such as hiring and position management, classification and compensation, organizational structure, and conflict resolution.
- Supervise the Human Resources Business Officer, delegating appropriate authority and overseeing performance.
- Represent the College on university-level HR committees.
- Serve as the College's Equal Opportunity Officer.

- Provide professional support to the Dean on special projects and initiatives, applying expertise in finance, HR, and administration as needed.
- Regularly interact with faculty, staff, and senior university administrators to ensure smooth operational alignment and communication.
- Represent the Dean and the College in business and administrative meetings across the University.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years of greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated success in professional management positions for financial operations within an academic environment
- Demonstrated appropriate interpersonal skills such as the ability to clearly communicate (written/oral) and build professional relationship with faculty, management, and staff
- Ability to motivate others, build teamwork and prioritize workloads and shifting priorities
- Ability to work well in a cooperative, welcoming environment that values different viewpoints and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to think logically and solve complex problems, with excellent organizational and analytical skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly to a variety of audiences orally and in writing
- Advanced Excel skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing various funding sources (i.e. state-appropriated, receipts, contracts/grants, foundation) within an academic environment
- Demonstrated proficiency to utilize PeopleSoft financial/human resource systems
- Competent knowledge of State and NCSU finance/accounting/HR policies and procedures with the ability to interpret, communicate and apply
- Familiarity with State/university budgeting systems and processes
