Essential Job Duties:
This position is to provide support for the Community Access Veterinary Outreach Program which will provide much needed veterinary care to underserved populations throughout the state of NC. The Community Access Program will partner with cities and counties for vaccination/wellness events and provide primary care treatments to pets residing in communities identified as underserved through financial indicators such as mean household income and/or feasible access to veterinary health care within the area.

The incumbent will assist veterinarians with and perform examinations, assessments, treatments, animal handling, and restraint. Participate in client education and offer enhanced communication skills & empathy for patients & clients. Maintain appropriate medical records and ensure good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital. Offer patient and client support with an empathetic approach to sharing knowledge of animal health practices and overall wellness. This individual will be responsible for coordinating the doctor(s) and supervising additional personnel onsite at events. This individual will be responsible for all administrative tasks and logistics related to coordinating these community outreach events in support of the Director of HWC & EFAVC.

Skills needed for the role include:

  • Sample collection (i.e. venipuncture), medication & sedation administration, drug calculations, "low stress" animal handling, general care principles, wound management, various parasite testing.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to adjust communication style to effectively communicate with customers from various demographic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and actively participate in problem-solving in the moment.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • N/A

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting
  • Ability to work with and around sick patients, various smells, disease processes, and emotionally charged situations
  • Ability to effectively use MS Word and Excel
  • Previous experience with euthanasia process
  • Fear Free certification

Required license or certification:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of NC or qualified to sit for the NC State exam.
  • Driver's License is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
