Military and Veteran Student Success Coordinator

What You Will Do:
The Military and Veteran Student Support Coordinator aids the coordination and delivery of wraparound support services for NLU’s military-connected student population, including veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and their dependents. Serving both online and on-campus students, this role ensures military-affiliated students are supported, connected, and positioned for success from enrollment through graduation. The coordinator strengthens cross-campus collaboration, cultivates post-enrollment external partnerships, and champions initiatives that support retention and student achievement, advancing NLU’s commitment to becoming a Military Friendly® Gold institution.
Essential Responsibilities
- Student Success, Retention & Connection:
- Serve as the first point of contact for enrolled military-connected students
- Provide tailored onboarding and holistic support throughout the student journey by monitoring student progress, implementing intervention strategies when necessary, and facilitating enriching programming
- Foster a sense of belonging and connection through light-touch, high-impact engagement programs
Cross-Campus & Post-Enrollment External Collaboration:
- Collaborate intentionally with the military outreach and enrollment team to ensure smooth handoffs, continuity of care, and alignment between recruitment, enrollment, and post-enrollment support efforts
- Coordinate with internal departments—including Career Bridge, Academic Advising, and Student Support Services—to create and sustain a cohesive network of support for military-affiliated students
- Assist with cultivating post-enrollment partnerships with veteran-serving organizations and agencies that enhance ongoing student support, well-being, and career preparation
- Collaborate with the Military & Veterans Program Advisory Board
- In collaboration with Marketing and Communications, support efforts to raise awareness of veterans' programs, services, and impact through targeted messaging and outreach campaigns
- Training & Institutional Capacity Building:
- Be informed and up-to-date on military-connected student needs
- Coordinate with Student Engagement Leadership to provide training and consultation for faculty and staff to enhance inclusive practices and military cultural competence. Keeping relevant faculty and staff member aware of key updates related to military education benefits and policies
- Assessment & Reporting:
- Coordinate NLU’s Military Friendly® School submission process and other external recognitions
- Monitor and report on student outcomes, engagement trends, and program effectiveness
- Use data to support strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts
- Other Administrative:
- Provide guidance and supervision to student workers, interns, and/or an AmeriCorps VISTA member, aligning their work with military student success priorities
- Assist Marketing and Enrollment leadership with managing the budget for military and veterans’ programs, ensuring responsible and strategic use of resources to maximize impact
- Define and conduct assessment plans and reports
- Participate in college committees and campus-wide initiatives
- Contribute to university and divisional annual planning efforts
- Additional related tasks and responsibilities as assigned by university leadership, adapting to changing needs and strategic priorities
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, Public Administration or other related field, required
- Military affiliation (i.e. veteran, reservist, military spouse/partner), required
- Minimum of one year of experience supporting adult learners, military-connected students, veterans, or nontraditional student populations
- Solid understanding of military and veteran student experiences, including military culture, transition needs, and education benefits (e.g., GI Bill®, Tuition Assistance, Yellow Ribbon Program)
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners to improve student support and retention this should be reflected in competencies
- Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom or Teams), CRM or case management systems (e.g., Salesforce, Navigate, or similar), Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and PowerPoint), and learning management systems
- Ability to and experience with creating and delivering workshops, webinars, or support groups for adult or military learners
- Takes a proactive approach to anticipating and preventing problems. When problems occur, defines those problems, investigates obstacles, gathers relevant information, decides whether solving the problem should be a group decision, generates and analyzes alternate solutions and arrives at a workable solution.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends including required service at commencement activities. Willingness and ability to occasionally visit other NLU campuses.
