Essential Job Duties:
This career opportunity position primarily performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting/repair of equipment housed in the Department of Chemistry. Candidates will receive needed training on the job. This position also supports stockroom and facilities operations as needed.

Responsibilities for this position include:

Electrical/Electronics Repair

  • Component level diagnostics
  • Component repair/replacement
  • Soldering
  • Use of diagnostic tools: Oscilloscope, Digital multimeter, amp probe, circuit tracer...
  • Attend training offered by vendors when new equipment arrives in order to be able to service equipment (as much) in-house as possible.
  • Service manuals not always available for reference, contact vendors for assistance when necessary
  • Occasionally necessary to contact vendors for repairs when equipment is under warranty or repairs are beyond the skill level of the individual
  • Work closely with vendors/faculty/staff/students to resolve issues

  • EPR (Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometers)
  • NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers)
  • LCMS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometers)
  • HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography)
  • FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers)
  • Various Analytical equipment
  • Gloveboxes
  • Laminar Flow Hoods
  • Recirculating chillers
  • Ice Machines/refrigerators/freezers
  • Pumps (vacuum and liquid)
  • Air compressors
  • Electric motors
  • Power tools
  • Hot plates
Plumbing/Carpentry/Metal Fabrication
  • Experience working with low and high pressure gases
  • Experience with fluid systems and plumbing
  • Swagelok and other plumbing methods
  • Use available tools and equipment to build items out of wood/metal
  • Install shelving
Equipment and Office Relocation
  • Assist in moving furniture
  • Assist in moving laboratory equipment
  • Coordinate with vendors/Facilities
  • Coordinate delivery and installation of scientific equipment with faculty. Ensure all utilities are available. Ensure availability to solve/manage problems in case any arise the day of the installation.
  • Lift 50lbs regularly, 100lbs on occasion
Use of Tools
  • Basic hand tools
  • Corded and cordless power tools
  • Table saw
  • Band saw
  • Drill press
  • Sanders/Grinders
Serve as back-up in Stockroom (Occasional to maintain business continuity)
  • Sell/Inventory products using web based software
  • Safely handle and transfer chemicals
  • Provide excellent customer service
A typical day may include the following although no two days are alike.
  • Check email periodically
  • Check the building(s) periodically, some local travel necessary
  • Submit and follow up on work orders as needed
  • Check-in with Facilities as needed
  • Resolve minor facility/equipment issues
  • Work on long term projects
    • Instrument repair
    • Lab/Office set-up/clean-out
    • Meet/Call vendors
    • Plumbing/Fabrication
  • Travel to local businesses to pick-up parts using department vehicle
  • Provide cryogenic services (training to be provided)
    • Nitrogen replacement is once a week
    • Helium is once every twenty weeks
    • Ability to work under pressure and execute instructions in a calm way
    • Must work with equipment that produces strong magnetic field
  • Assist with itemizing items for surplus
  • Adhere to safety protocols
    Requires successful completion of safety courses provided by NC State's Environmental Health and Safety

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Associate's Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic mechanical repairs, including carpentry, metal fabrication, and plumbing
  • Cross-train on multiple facets of e-shop and stockroom operations and department facilities
  • General computer software knowledge
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, without assistance
  • Superior manual dexterity
  • Ability to independently prioritize daily tasks and pivot as needed when unexpected incidents arise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a research environment

Required license or certification:

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
