Brigham Young University (BYU) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of Faculty (AD-F) within its developing School of Medicine. This leadership role is critical to shaping the future of medical education at BYU, aligning with the institution’s mission to provide a faith-based, academically rigorous medical education rooted in the principles of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
As the School of Medicine prepares for accreditation, the AD-F will work under the direction of the Dean of the School of Medicine to design, implement, and continuously improve the faculty experience in the School of Medicine.
Role Description:
The Associate Dean of Faculty (AD-F) at the Brigham Young University (BYU) School of Medicine (SoM) is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Dean. The AD-F is responsible for all faculty-related matters within the school, including oversight of faculty recruitment, appointments, reappointments, promotion, and performance evaluation processes. The role also encompasses faculty development, mentoring, and retention; the creation and implementation of School bylaws related to faculty; and the management of faculty records and affiliation agreements.
The AD-F ensures all faculty affairs align with the mission and policies of BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This position requires strong collaboration with the university’s academic leadership, including the Associate Academic Vice President (AAVP) and other campus offices, to ensure institutional consistency and accountability.
Duties/Expectations:
Faculty Governance and Policy Development
- Develop and maintain SoM-specific bylaws governing faculty roles, responsibilities, appointments, and ranks
- Create and oversee transparent, mission-aligned policies for faculty appointments, reappointments, promotion, and performance review
- Establish clear criteria and procedures for academic titles, tenure eligibility (if applicable), and rank advancement within the SoM
- Ensure all policies align with overarching university policies, guidelines, and the AAVP’s office
Faculty Hiring and Appointments
- Design and implement equitable and mission-aligned faculty recruitment, onboarding, and appointment processes
- Coordinate with department chairs and hiring committees to ensure a consistent and spiritually grounded approach to identifying and retaining exceptional faculty
- Manage and maintain all faculty appointment records, rank designations, and position justifications
Faculty Evaluation and Advancement
- Oversee annual performance review and multi-year evaluation processes for all SoM faculty
- Collaborate with university offices to ensure faculty evaluations support institutional advancement and promotion pathways
- Guide promotion and reappointment reviews, ensuring decisions are timely, transparent, and consistent with university expectations
Faculty Relations and Development
- Serve as a resource for faculty mentoring, professional development, and leadership preparation
- Address faculty grievances and concerns, ensuring a fair and principled process that reflects Christlike compassion and accountability
- Collaborate with BYU’s Office of Faculty Relations and Human Resources to implement university polices and procedures to address faculty misconduct
Adjunct and Affiliated Faculty
- Oversee the process for appointing and renewing adjunct and affiliated faculty, including clinical preceptors and volunteer faculty
- Maintain affiliation agreements and records in collaboration with legal and administrative offices
- Coordinate faculty development and engagement opportunities for adjunct and affiliated members
Faculty Recordkeeping and Compliance
- Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date records for all SoM faculty, including evaluations, CVs, appointments, and compliance documentation
- Ensure faculty databases are secure and accessible for accreditation, audit, and reporting purposes
- Collaborate with the Office of Accreditation and Quality Improvement to provide accurate data for LCME and institutional reporting
Institutional and Strategic Collaboration
- Serve as the primary liaison between the SoM and central university offices on matters related to faculty life and policy
- Participate in the Dean’s Executive Leadership Team and represent the faculty perspective in strategic planning and resource allocation
- Foster a culture of covenant belonging and spiritual purpose among faculty, supporting them in their academic, clinical, and spiritual growth
Required Degree: Terminal degree in medicine, higher education, health professions, or related field (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, EdD, DNP). The required degree must be completed by the start date.
Experience:
Required:
- Senior academic leadership experience at the level of department chair, associate dean, or equivalent
- Proven track record in faculty hiring, promotion, evaluation, and policy development
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex personnel matters with discretion and integrity
- Deep commitment to and alignment with BYU’s academic mission and the doctrine and values of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ
Preferred:
- 5+ years of administrative leadership in an academic medical or health professions setting
- Experience managing adjunct and affiliated faculty
- Familiarity with university policies related to rank, tenure, promotion, and disciplinary processes
- Expertise in organizational governance, policy drafting, and implementation
- Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills grounded in compassion and principle
- Knowledge of accreditation standards relevant to faculty affairs (e.g., LCME)
