This leadership role is critical to shaping the future of medical education at BYU, aligning with the institution’s mission to provide a faith-based, academically rigorous medical education rooted in the principles of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As the School of Medicine prepares for accreditation, the AD-A will work under the direction of the Senior Associate Dean of Academics (SADA) to design, implement, and continuously improve admissions to the Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Role Description:

The Associate Dean of Admissions (AD-A) at the Brigham Young University (BYU) School of Medicine (SoM) is responsible for leading all aspects of the admissions process, including policy development, outreach, recruitment, application review, and candidate selection. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Academics, the AD-A works closely with the Dean’s leadership team, faculty, staff, and university administration to ensure the admissions process reflects the school’s academic standards and faith-based mission to prepare Christ-centered, compassionate physician-leaders.

The AD-A chairs the Admissions Committee and oversees its work in identifying applicants who demonstrate academic excellence, spiritual alignment with BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a deep commitment to service, integrity, and lifelong learning. The ideal candidate will bring experience in medical education leadership, student recruitment, holistic admissions, and fostering covenant belonging within a spiritually grounded academic environment.

Specific Duties Include:

Admissions Strategy and Operations

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the SoM’s admissions philosophy, policies, and procedures in alignment with institutional and LCME accreditation standards
  • Chair and oversee the work of the Admissions Committee, including selection process oversight, reviewer training, and policy adherence
  • Develop a fair, transparent, mission-aligned holistic review process emphasizing academic readiness, spiritual maturity, character, and service orientation

Outreach and Recruitment

  • Design and implement strategies to recruit and matriculate a highly qualified applicant pool reflective of the school’s values and global mission
  • Strengthen admissions pathways through collaboration with Church Education System institutions, the Office of Belonging, and international Church networks
  • Oversee development of admissions marketing materials, including website content, communications, and on-campus events

Applicant Experience and Systems

  • Ensure effective management of admissions operations and data systems (e.g., AMCAS, BYU systems), including confidentiality, compliance, and efficiency
  • Supervise staff responsible for applicant communication, recruitment, and interview logistics
  • Administer the holistic interview or equivalent process, ensuring alignment with the school’s mission and appropriate training for interviewers

Mission-Aligned Collaboration

  • Partner with the Office of Belonging and other university units to cultivate an environment consistent with the principle of covenant belonging
  • Work with academic leaders and student services to ensure the admissions process supports the integration of students into a community "knit together in love"

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

  • Track admissions outcomes and trends to inform strategic decisions and reporting needs
  • Prepare and contribute data for LCME accreditation and internal reviews
  • Guide regular evaluation of admissions processes and implement improvements as needed

Required Degree: Terminal degree in medicine, health professions education, higher education, public health, or related field (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, EdD). The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

Required:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in medical or health professions admissions, student services, or higher education administration
  • Experience in holistic review processes with a focus on mission-aligned selection
  • Deep commitment to BYU’s mission and spiritual aims and alignment with the principles of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of leadership in undergraduate medical education or health professions admissions
  • Familiarity with AAMC admissions tools, national application services (e.g., AMCAS), and admissions software systems
  • Experience collaborating with Church-sponsored institutions and global service networks
  • Clinical, academic, or service background in medicine or health professions
  • Demonstrated mentoring and student development expertise
