Essential Job Duties:
The Rodent Specialist will be responsible for colony health, breeding, facilities management, and communication between researchers. The incumbent will also be required to assist other technicians within other LAR species units as needed, including being cross-trained sufficiently to support operations of those other species units. This technician should be well-versed in rodent colony management, procedures, and training for PIs.

Duties include:

  • Ability to maintain transgenic mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, mouse ordering, interacting with vet techs, database management).
  • Perform various experimental procedures, including phenotyping the mice, tissue harvesting and preparation, anesthesia administration, and tissue sectioning.
  • Keep track of drug inventories for sedatives and anesthetics and maintain detailed logs of usage and disposal of controlled substances. Assist with data analysis.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook. Engage in laboratory research by performing complex lab and research-related service tasks.
  • Support the development, design, and conduct of increasingly complex research projects.
  • Perform complex tasks independently and adapt methods and procedures to meet research needs.
  • Complete specialized treatments in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Work proactively to keep patients clean and comfortable.
  • Maintain a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed, and infection is not spread.
  • Handle all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately.
  • Follow all radiation safety, OSHA, IACUC, USDA, AAALAC, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in mouse colony management.
  • Knowledge of other rodent animal species or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to provide a high level of service to clients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a service environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive background and knowledge of modern laboratory animal husbandry practices including dogs, fish, small ruminants, swine, ponies, cats, reptiles, rabbits, rodents, amphibians and avian species.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal, state and local health and safety regulations and demonstrated skill at implementing same.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in oversight of record-keeping required by various agencies.

Required license or certification:

  • Valid driver's license required.
