Summary

This position is for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Fire Technology based at the Eureka campus. The position will involve teaching courses through multiple modalities (i.e. face-to-face, correspondence, online, other distance modalities) and teaching assignments may require night and/or weekend assignments on the Tompkins Hill campus and other locations. The Fire Technology Assistant Professor will teach courses that support the fire technology program including the needs of the academy and the community.

Additional responsibilities and duties include:
  • Participate in community advisory committee meetings by calling meetings, preparing agendas, and ensuring minutes are taken.
  • Nominate potential advisory committee members and discuss with department faculty and division dean.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the Fire Technology curriculum, including transfer/articulation agreements with colleges and universities and developing credit and non-credit courses for local departments and the community.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and ensure safe practices on training grounds.
  • Engage in institutional, program, degree, and course-level assessment.
  • Participate in the College's shared governance process.
  • Participate in local outreach activities representing the Fire Technology Program.
  • Attend local Fire Chiefs Association and Instructors Association meetings.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, colleagues, industry stakeholders, government agencies, media, and the general public.
  • Aiding in all necessary steps to gain State Fire Training Accreditation
Teaching assignments may include night and weekend assignments and teaching courses through online or other distance modalities both on the Tompkins Hill campus and other locations.

Anticipated start date for this position is Spring 2026.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching experience that provides the candidate with the ability to teach a broad range of fire technology courses.
  • Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot equipment to support the Fire/EMS Lab Technician as necessary.
  • Experience with multi-agency training coordination.
  • Experience in managing and overseeing assistant instructors, guest lecturers, and skills coaches (qualified student assistants) during firefighter-related lecture and lab instruction as required by SFT.
  • Meets the current SFT qualifications for primary or lead instructor for the following Fire Service Training and Education Program courses {FSTEP) embedded in a Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 Academy: Fire Fighter Survival, Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Technician {Vehicle Extrication), Confined Space Rescue Awareness.
  • Meets the current SFT qualifications for lead evaluator to conduct the Certification Written and Skills Evaluations for Fire Fighter 1, Fire Fighter 2, Wildland Fire Fighter 1, and Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations and Weapons of Mass Destruction.
  • Possesses the technical expertise to properly and safely demonstrate the use and operation of all required equipment identified in the SFT Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter 2 Course Plans.
  • California State Fire Training CEET, RIO and Ethics Certification
  • Experience with SFT Course Request and Course Return Processing of embedded FSTEP courses.

Education and Experience

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher AND Two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment OR Associate's Degree AND Six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
  • Meets the Primary Instructor and Fire Fighter Instructor Qualifications as required by the State Fire Training {SFT) Division of the California Office of State Fire Marshal {Sections 6.2 and 6.6 of SFT Procedures Manual).
  • Active registered instructor in good standing with State Fire Training.

Salary Grade: Based on education and experience

Salary: $69,660.00- $99,963.00/Annually (Salary range, based on education, continues to a maximum of $156,613.00/Annually)

Conditions of Employment

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful clearance of a criminal background check, freedom from tuberculosis, and proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States prior to the first day of work. The District may select additional qualified candidates should unexpected vacancies or needs occur during the recruitment/selection process. College of the Redwoods Faculty Organization is the exclusive bargaining representative for College of the Redwoods faculty employees. Each employee hired into a faculty position shall contribute to the administration of this contract by membership dues or service fees.

Initial salary placement is determined by education and teaching/professional experience. Refer to the CRFO Collective Bargaining Agreement for specific details on salary placement.

full-time employees and their dependents. Faculty also receive sick leave and personal holidays. Retirement benefits are administered through CalSTRS.
