Position Highlights

The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AzVDL) at the University of Arizona is currently accepting applications for a Veterinary Pathologist position. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated expertise and experience aligned with current industry standards.

On-site anatomic pathologists are responsible for performing necropsies, gross and histopathological examinations on a variety of animal species. Additional duties include providing biopsy services, consulting with colleagues, and composing and interpreting diagnostic reports.

Off-site anatomic pathologists will conduct histopathological evaluations across all species and deliver detailed written reports of their findings.

This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a supportive and collegial team of faculty and staff, and to be part of the University of Arizona's Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) community.

Duties & Responsibilities

Biopsy service

  • Has a complete understanding of histopathologic examination of surgical biopsy specimens from all species.
  • Writes and disseminates reports for clients/stakeholders (can be internal stakeholders as well as outside officials such as federal and state departments) on findings.
  • Includes feedback from veterinarians on results.
  • Recommends ancillary testing when indicated.
  • Flexible in responding to variety in practices and approaches.

Clinical Pathology

  • Read cytology in-house.
  • Has a complete understanding of clinical pathology specimens from all species.
  • Writes and disseminates reports for clients/stakeholders (can be internal stakeholders as well as outside officials such as federal and state departments) on findings.
  • Includes feedback from veterinarians on results.
  • Recommends ancillary testing when indicated.
  • Flexible in responding to variety in practices and approaches.
  • Clinical pathology requires the ability to manage highly complex cases and situations, often in a time sensitive manner.
  • Clin Path will report those results as well as order ancillary testing.
  • Writing reports of results within a stated turn around time.

Field necropsy

  • Requires ability to manage highly complex cases and situations and interpret results from off site necropsy cases and ancillary testing and writing reports of results.
  • Read and analyze slides, providing expert opinions to veterinarians based on their subject matter expertise.
  • Contributes new approaches and opportunities for pathology in a changing professional landscape.
  • Brings these new approaches to leadership and colleagues.
  • Complete knowledge of job and industry best practices.
  • Consultation with colleagues and stakeholders orally and in writing.
  • Able to transfer data to a wide client base.
  • Able to work independently to achieve complete reports within a set turn around time that meet the needs of clients, state and federal agencies, local agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM from an AVMA recognized school or college of veterinary medicine and American College of Veterinary Pathologists board certification in anatomic pathology or clinical pathology and
  • Eight years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a quality management system
