Assistant Teaching Professor of Education
New Mexico Tech (NMT) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Education to begin in August 2026 or sooner in the STEM Education Center. Applicants should have a Master’s in Education or a closely related field, at least three years of K-12 teaching experience (preferably at the secondary level and in the US schools), and a valid New Mexico(or national) K-12 teaching licensure. A Ph.D in Education or a closely related field is desired. Ability to teach Education courses, model teaching instruction, evaluate teachers, and coordinate mentors within local K-12 schools is required.
The individual hired should have an educational background and experience to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become successful K-12 teachers in the state of NewMexico. The individual should help raise the profile of the programs through the quality instruction, advising, and mentoring of students, and their contributions to the STEM Education Center, institute, local K-12 schools, community, and profession through relevant service.
New Mexico Tech currently has accreditation from NM Public Education Department (NMPED)for three Teacher Licensure Programs: Graduate Certificate in 1) Secondary Alternative Licensure Program (ALP), 2) Elementary ALP, and 3) Undergraduate Minor in Secondary Education (UMSE). The Assistant Teaching Professor of Education will have responsibilities thatinclude (a) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Education (EDUC). Teaching loads for this position are typically three to four courses or 12 credits per semester. (b) Serving as an academic advisor for undergraduate and graduate certificate students. (c) Assisting in STEM Education Center and university activities that include assessment and accreditation, and otherservice activities in the profession and community.
Candidates must be willing to teach day, evening, and/or weekend classes and conduct classes through multifaceted teaching strategies for person-to-person, hybrid, or online teaching modalities. All members of the faculty also have the responsibility to accept those reasonableduties assigned to them within their fields of competence. Actual assignments will depend onprogram needs. This person will interact mainly with the Director of the STEM Education Center,faculty, students, and office staff. This person will also be expected to work with members of the university community (e.g., administrative offices, other departments, and the distance education office) and beyond (e.g., prospective students and their families, grant agencies,donors, and legislators).
New Mexico Tech is a public 4-year technical university that is also a Hispanic-ServingInstitution (HSI). The goals for NMT’s STEM Education Center include 1) increasing the number of student enrollments in NMT’s teacher education programs and improving graduation rates tohave more STEM teachers in the K-12 classroom, and 2) facilitating STEM education reform within and beyond NMT. STEM Education Center faculty and staff are involved in numerous transdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues across the NMT campus.

New Mexico Tech is located in Socorro (population ~8500), ~75 miles south of the Albuquerque metro, with a relatively low cost of living for the desert southwest, and the campus is situated ina residential area. The nearby Magdalena mountains and numerous desert canyons provide excellent opportunities for hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. The Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, located just south of Socorro along a major north-south flyway, offers some of the best birding in the United States. Socorro is about an hour south of Albuquerque,with its many attractions and convenient airport access.
