Position Highlights

The Academic Coach is responsible for the delivery of a learning strategies curriculum through direct one-on-one academic coaching as well as teaching multiple sections of UNIV 100, Support for MATH 100.

Academic coaching is an individualized service designed to equip students with the skills and resources they need to navigate the complexities of college life. Through one-on-one meetings with a professional coach, students receive personalized guidance that empowers them to set and pursue goals, fine-tune their academic skillset, and enhance their personal and emotional well-being.

Academic coaches will also teach UNIV 100, a 1-credit hour in-person course designed to provide students additional support as they work towards college level math. The purpose of the UNIV 100 course is to complement MATH 100 in two areas: by providing additional time to review and practice math topics, and by strengthening study skills and learning strategies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Holistically support students through one-on-one academic coaching meetings. Students are referred to academic coaches through MATH 100 & UNIV 100, Academic Recovery, and self-referral.
  • Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating welcoming environments and implementing coaching strategies for students to grow and gain new skills.
  • Teach multiple sections of UNIV 100. This includes leading class sessions, assessing student work, assisting students, and meeting one on one with students.
  • Work with THINK TANK undergraduate student workers, who assist students in UNIV 100.
  • Work with Peer Academic Coaches to update and create academic skills workshops.
  • Collaborate with students to develop an individualized academic success plan based on strengths, goals, and areas to refine. The coach will check in with students and adapt academic success plans as needed.
  • Identify, instruct, and monitor the use of essential academic strategies for students during one-on-one meetings as well as within the classroom.
  • Contribute to the curriculum for the UNIV 100 course. This includes understanding the first-year student experience, designing relevant course modules, assessing student work, and providing resources to assist students according to the team standards.
  • Create engaging educational materials for one-on-one student meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records from standing appointments and within the UNIV 100 class that can assist in program reporting and assessment.
  • Understand, incorporate, and direct students to appropriate university resources, policies, and professionals to assist students in reaching their educational goals.
  • Deliver specialized student services such as workshops and presentations for target populations and work with academic colleges, academic advisors, and campus departments.
  • Participate in research goals of department through program development, implementation, evaluation, and modification.
  • Regularly communicate the progress, outcomes, and direction of work to supervisor.
  • Support divisional student success efforts through participation in a variety of department activities and committee work.
  • Support department through participation in a variety of activities and committee work.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Manager of Academic Coaching Services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of FERPA and ethical principles in working with students.
  • Open to enjoying math and having a growth mindset about math.
  • Ability to establish a supportive relationship with students.
  • Understanding of strengths-based coaching and learning.
  • Knowledge in implementing and facilitating a student success program that combines learning strategies, academic study skills, and student development theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and high degree of openness to new approaches and new ideas.
  • Willingness to connect students to THINK TANK services, program components, and university resources.
  • Understanding of and commitment to best practices for creating an environment sensitive to student diversity that promotes inclusive educational excellence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required OR 1 year of relevant work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work or related field.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing learning support services.
  • Experience with instructional delivery in academic support courses at the university or high school level.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims.
