Job Description Summary:
Provide health education and data collection for the UKanQuit. UKanQuit provides one-on-one inpatient bedside tobacco treatment consultation at The University of Kansas Health System. Since 2006, when the program was founded, we have treated well over 15,000 patients. Our tobacco treatment specialists provide brief counseling and treatment planning. We provide an in-depth training program online and/or in-person. This is a clinical position and will require work hours to be performed on site in Kansas City at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
This is a full-time limited term position ending on 6/30/26.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in human services field (psychology, counseling, social work, nursing, etc.) or other health education related field.
Work Experience: Minimum one (1) year of professional, full-time experience in public health, health education or counseling, or another social service field.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/Certifications: Certified as a tobacco treatment specialist. Have CTTS (Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist) or NCTTP (National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice)
Work Experience:
- Three to five (3 - 5) years' experience in counseling and staff management.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience with electronic health records, Epic preferred
- Experience in quality improvement
- Excellent organizational, written communication, and oral communication skills.
- Assess tobacco addiction level and nicotine withdrawal among patients.
- Recommend medications to manage withdrawal while patients are in the hospital.
- Provide brief counseling and treatment planning.
- Collaborate with medical team to provide discharge medications
- Proactively refer patients for follow-up support post hospitalization
- Document encounters in the electronic medical record
- Contact patients one month post discharge to conduct a brief evaluation survey
- Participate in process improvement activities to enhance the delivery of services
- Help develop and implement new and revised policies and procedures affecting tobacco treatment services.
- Ensure the service maintains accurate, HIPPA compliant and confidential medical records.
- Communicate with patients' interdisciplinary medical teams (physicians, nursing staff, pharmacists, etc.) regarding smoking cessation medication and treatment plan.
- Develop educational resources, such as brochures and posters about new tobacco products in the market and educate hospital staff and patients about tobacco cessation medications to quit smoking
- Assist in training Americorps members during their service time at UKQ
- Assure all information is collected and entered into the service database.
- Contribute to preparation of annual reports and respond to reporting requirements and procedures.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
