EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION
The primary responsibility of this individual is to provide instruction to Western students enrolled in the Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate program teaching a variety of Heavy Equipment classes such as Skid Steer, Loader, Excavator, and Bulldozer, taught at the main campus in Rock Springs. This person must be able to relate to a wide variety of students; students range from high school students with little background to employees who have worked many years in industry.
It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective, competent manner and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE
- Provides quality instruction to students in assigned courses in Heavy Equipment Fundamentals, Skid Steer/Man Lift Operations, Loader Operation, Excavator Operation and Bulldozer Operation.
- Provides quality learning experiences both in the classroom and in the hands-on labs for all students enrolled while maintaining the integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.
- 3.. States clear objectives and criteria for each course in the course syllabus; follows the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrates the appropriate College’s learning goals into each course; evaluates students’ performance and annually assesses student performance in light of these objectives and criteria.
- Teaches courses in a variety of environments and modes. Examples include teaching in the evening and weekends in Rock Springs; developing and teaching customized short courses tailored to the needs of local industry; teaching in the standard classroom, lab and through alternative methods, such as internet, or a combination of these methods.
- Designs and implements effective learning processes for students; provides feedback on student improvement in attaining the WWCC Goals for Student Success.
- Collaborates with the School of Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Chair and the Director of Workforce Development to design courses or training that meets the needs of local industry; meets with training directors or others from local construction industry, responding promptly to inquiries by phone or e-mail, and accompanying the Director of Workforce Development, at times, on visits to local construction companies.
- Learns to communicate clearly and effectively using the college network system, including the e-mail and calendar system, MyWestern, Canvas, and word processing; integrates learning with technology into the classroom as appropriate.
- Refers students to the resources in the College Learning Center, Peer Tutor Center, Net Tutor, Library, Mustang Success, and Wellness and Accessibility.
- Submits syllabi, student evaluations, grades, and other required information in a timely manner. Regularly check email and respond in a timely manner to School Chair, Department Facilitator, etc.
- Participate in annual Adjunct In-Service, all departmental assessments, Title IX and other trainings.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Abilities,)Academic Credentials:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Diesel mechanics field and (5) years of discipline-specific professional experience.
- It is preferred if instructors have ASE automotive certification for heavy trucks.
Related Degrees:
- Automotive, Mechanical engineering, or other related degree.
Equivalent Experience:
- Associate’s degree and four (5) years of discipline-specific professional experience.
- No degree but has eight (10) years of discipline-specific professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)
- A.A.S. degree in a Technology & Industry-related field.
- Journeyman as an Operating Engineer.
- Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.
- Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
- Demonstrated excellent in teaching at a community college.
Equivalency Statement:
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience that has provided comparable knowledge and abilities may be acceptable.
