The Financial Aid Counselor supports students through every step of the financial aid process, through graduation. This role is responsible for counseling students on available loan and aid options, ensuring the timely processing and disbursement of funds, and upholding institutional, state, and federal compliance. The Counselor plays a critical role in student success by delivering high-quality service, resolving concerns, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the Financial Aid Office.
Key Responsibilities
Student Advising & Support:
- Provide financial aid counseling to students regarding federal and institutional financial aid programs. Help students make informed decisions about loan options and repayment responsibilities.
- Manage the complete aid cycle—from receipt of FAFSA application to disbursement—creating financial aid packages that ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with Title IV and institutional regulations.
Fund Management Oversight:
- Review and monitor financial aid disbursements, living expense calculations, advance requests, and other funding reports to ensure students receive funds promptly.
Issue Resolution:
- Serve as a point of contact for resolving student financial aid issues. Collaborate with colleagues and departments across the institution to resolve the issues
Student Support & Communication
- Send timely emails, responses, reminders, and notifications to students.
- Identify and communicate with students their next steps and clearly specify which documents students need to submit.
Regulatory & Institutional Policy Adherence:
- Stay informed of changes to federal and institutional policies. Ensure all actions are compliant with current Title IV regulations.
Operational Improvements:
- Identify and recommend opportunities to enhance office workflows, improve student service, and integrate technology solutions.
Professional Development:
- Participate in financial aid training, workshops, and conferences as needed to maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices and regulatory changes.
Compliance & Confidentiality
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and institutional regulations, including Title IV and FERPA.
- Handle sensitive financial and personal student information with the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in financial aid; FAAC® certification preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of federal financial aid regulations and Title IV policies.
- Proficiency in student information systems and financial aid management software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
Work Environment & Schedule:
- This position may require occasional extended hours during peak processing times.
