Description

The Muleskinner is seeking applications for the position of Managing Editor. General responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to playing a pivotal role in supporting the Editor-in-Chief in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the student-run newspaper, The Muleskinner. This position requires strong leadership skills, a passion for journalism, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The Managing Editor will assist in content planning, production, and staff management, ensuring that the newspaper maintains a high standard of quality while meeting deadlines. After serving as the Managing Editor, the GA will have the opportunity to transition to the role of Editor-in-Chief.

Examples of Duties

In this role, the Managing Editor will assume key leadership responsibilities, including taking over the duties of the Editor-in-Chief in their absence to ensure continuity of operations. As the primary point of contact for campus editors and section editors during production nights, the position will provide guidance and final approval in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief. The position will assist in leading weekly staff meetings to plan content and discuss the direction of news coverage, contributing to critique meetings to provide feedback on staff performance and content quality. The position will supervise all editorial positions to ensure job responsibilities are being met, reinforcing deadlines and policies. Collaborating with the Editor-in-Chief, the position will also participate in conducting semester reviews of the editorial staff and play a role in the interview and selection process for new staff members. A key part of the responsibility will be fostering a motivating, positive environment for the editorial team, encouraging creativity and accountability. In terms of content and production, the position will assist in planning and executing special projects, trips, and material submissions for awards. The position will also organize and maintain the archives, ensuring that current issues are updated online, and regularly check in with campus and section editors to ensure smooth production while seeking out new story ideas. The position will manage the Muleskinner's online accounts to keep content current and engaging. As a liaison between the Muleskinner and the campus community, the position will foster relationships and collaboration.

Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, mass communication, or related field by the start date is preferred.
  • Currently admitted to a UCM graduate degree program
  • 3.0 or higher graduate level GPA if previous graduate level courses have been taken
  • 2.7 or higher undergraduate level GPA if no previous graduate level courses have been taken

GA Hour Expectations: 20 hours a week

Total Stipend for Semester: $4,950

Working Days & Hours: Irregular work hours - 20 hours per week

Scholarship: Students filling a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position are eligible to receive a graduate tuition waiver, a graduate non-resident tuition waiver (if applicable), and a graduate mandatory fees waiver. The scholarships are in the form of a waiver and the funds are not deposited into the student's personal account. Instead, the student's bill is reduced by the amount of the scholarship awarded. If the maximum amount of the scholarship is not used, the remainder is not paid to the student in any form and unused scholarship money cannot be carried over to another semester. The scholarship is applied to graduate level courses only; courses taken for undergraduate credit are not eligible to be covered by the GA scholarship. The non-resident fee scholarship only applies to classes taken on the UCM Warrensburg campus. The maximum scholarship amounts are based on the size of assistantship held. For a full (20-hour per week) assistantship, the scholarship covers tuition costs and mandatory fees up to 12 credit hours of graduate coursework per semester. Graduate assistantship positions less than full will be prorated accordingly.

Special Instructions:

Full-time benefits-eligible position: Benefits include competitive salary; health, dental, vision, life insurance, AD & D, long-term disability; 3 weeks paid vacation per year; 3 weeks of accrued sick leave per year; 13 paid holidays; retirement; and generous education assistance for an employee, spouse and dependent children taking classes at UCM.

Part-time benefits-eligible positions: Benefits include generous education assistance for the employee.

Temporary, adjunct, student employment, or graduate assistant positions: Benefits are not included.
