Position Overview:
Southwestern University has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director of Student Activities. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life. The Assistant Director of Student Activities supports the overarching mission of student activities, with a focus on student leadership programs, the co-curricular experience, new student orientation and student transition programs. Supervises the Coordinator of Student Activities and the student office staff.
The incumbent is eligible for the option to live on campus in a University-provided apartment. If the Assistant Director resides in the apartment, they will receive free parking and participate in the on-call duty rotation for campus-wide student emergencies, including those in residential areas. This is a full-time exempt position eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
Essential Duties:
- Develop, coordinate, and implement comprehensive student leadership programming associated with the Student Engagement Center. This includes recruitment, advising, decision making, program development, research, and budget management.
- Develop a series of leadership experiences which include but not limited to student leadership retreats, and speaker series. Negotiate contracts with agents and speakers.
- Promote collaboration between student life units, student support services, academic departments, and faculty to support students and advance the University's retention and student success goals.
- Assist in monitoring and compiling assessment data related to student engagement within the Division of Student Life.
- Oversee the Coordinator of Student Activities in developing and presenting student organization development and leadership training.
- Contribute to thought leadership in collaboration with faculty and staff by serving on various retention-based committees tied to the University’s strategic priorities.
- Assist and support the AVP of Student Life in coordinating and leading campus programming, including co-curricular supports and retention initiatives, as well as implementing the co-curricular student experience.
- Select, train, and oversee Orientation Leaders for Sprog (New Student Orientation) and “Setting Sail” welcome week.
Additional Duties
- Prepare monthly reports on services and programs provided.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the AVP for Student Life.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in higher education, behavioral science, counseling, or related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of direct experience in college student development, student life, or related area of college and/or university administration.
- Experience in campus leadership programming and understanding of basic student development theories.
- Driver’s license to drive a University van.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in higher education, behavioral science, counseling, or related field.
Starting annual salary: $41,104. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting salary.
