Position Summary

The Director of Concentration in Mental Performance Consulting (MPC) at William James College (WJC) is for a full-time, 12-month faculty position as Associate or Assistant Professor. This role includes serving as the Director for the CMPC, which focuses on training graduate students in mental performance consulting within a mental health framework. Primary teaching responsibilities include face-to-face, hybrid, and online graduate courses. The faculty workload consists of teaching 18 graduate credit hours per academic year. Additional duties include academic advising, scholarly productivity, college service, collaboration, accreditation-related activities, and promotion of the program and the college. The Director must have expertise in sport and performance psychology or consulting and be committed to training students in mental performance consulting. They must also have a strong professional identity, leadership skills, and experience supporting students in meeting CMPC coursework and applied training requirements.

Essential Functions

Faculty

  • Teach 18 credits during the academic year (this can be distributed during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters). Course release is available for concentration directors. Overloads will be compensated at the regular overload rate. Teaching for other departments should be approved by your department chair.
  • Serve on institutional/faculty governance committees.
  • Advise 12 students.
  • Engage in admissions-related work such as attending Open Houses and Interview Days and reviewing applications.
  • Attend Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Faculty meetings, two hours every other week.
  • Attend an annual Counseling and Behavioral Health Department all-day faculty retreat.
  • Attend an annual all-school faculty retreat.
  • Attend all-school faculty meetings – once in the Fall and once in the Spring semesters.
  • Attend the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Attend Orientation (one day for preparation and two days for the actual orientation), usually the week before classes start, both in August and January.
  • Participate in other ad-hoc committees within the department or the school.

CMPC Director

  • Lead the CMPC, ensuring alignment with AASP and CMPC certification standards.
  • Oversee curriculum development and ensure students receive training in evidence-based mental performance consulting.
  • Develop and maintain external partnerships for student practicum placements.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance for students pursuing CMPC certification.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Counselor Education from a CACREP accredited program preferred, or doctoral degree in counseling or related area with at least one year of full-time teaching experience in a graduate counseling program prior to July 1, 2013 (as per CACREP 2024 standards). Preference will be given to applicants from a CACREP-accredited program. Will also consider Doctoral Degree in Clinical, Counseling, or Sports Psychology, with a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
  • Professional License: Licensed as a mental health counselor (LMHC) in Massachusetts (or license eligible if licensed as a counselor in another state with the expectation of obtaining the LMHC in MA within a year of employment). Licensed psychologists who are eligible to be licensed as LMHC will be considered. Faculty are expected to have a clinical license within a year of employment.
  • Certification in Mental Performance Consulting by the Association for Applied Sports Psychology.
  • Established professional identity as a mental health counselor or professional service as demonstrated by participation in counseling professional associations, presentations at conferences, and/or continued education presentations, among others.
  • Prefer 3 years of full-time or equivalent clinical experience post-master’s degree. At least 2 years of clinical experience is required, along with maintaining some involvement in clinical practice or consultation.
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching graduate students in a counseling program, including experience supervising practicum and internship students.
  • Scholarship: Research experience or development of pedagogical or clinical interventions, programs, or evaluation methods.
  • Familiarity with accreditation compliance and assessment reporting.
  • Experience teaching graduate students in a counseling or psychology program.
  • Strong commitment to Inclusive Excellence in training and practice.
  • Three years of post-master’s clinical or applied experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing academic programs or concentrations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AASP and CMPC certification requirements
