Job Description:

Function of Position:

This position will work cooperatively with TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) staff to positively impact the academic experience of new and existing students. The student success advocate will support project goals by providing one-on-one and group coaching to SSS program participants, developing and executing workshops, connecting students to campus resources, and other duties as assigned.

*This is a temporary, grant funded position.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Help students understand and use effective reading and learning strategies.
  • Assist students needing intensive study skills and reading help in a myriad of subjects.
  • Help students identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success.
  • Help students focus on individual goals and identify steps to reaching those goals.
  • Work with students to develop strong time management and organization.
  • Develop with students individualized academic plans.
  • Makes referrals based on student needs.
  • Motivate students to take ownership of their own academic success.
  • Refer students to other services on campus such as academic advising, personal counseling, career counseling, subject-specific tutoring, etc.
  • Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty;
  • Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters.
  • Participates in special projects to support SSS programming as needed.
  • Utilizes Starfish Early Alert system to monitor and follow-up with students.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field from a regionally-accredited higher education institution.
  • At least two years of experience working with first-generation, low-income, or students with disabilities in an academic or student support setting.
  • Strong advising, coaching, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students.
  • Experience in student development, retention strategies, and academic success initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Earned master's degree or higher in Education or a related field from a regionally-accredited higher education institution and/or currently working towards degree completion.
  • Two years of developmental reading teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services and/or TRIO programs.
  • Evidence of effective communication interpersonal, public speaking, and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability with designing, developing, implementing, conducting, and assessing educational programs.
  • Commitment to the mission of the institution, as well as continual professional growth.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently.
Additional Information:

Job Type: Part-time, in-person

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a salary of $17/hr. for candidates with a bachelor's degree or $19/hr. for those with a master's degree.
