Southern Connecticut State University is seeking candidates for Residence Hall Director. Southern Connecticut State University is a diverse and student-centered university dedicated to academic excellence, access, and service for the public good. Founded as a teachers’ college in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive public university of approximately 10,000 students, offering graduate and undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and professional disciplines. It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System. The university is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.

Reporting to the Associate Director or Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Residence Hall Director is a twelve-month, full-time, live-in professional responsible for developing safe, healthy, and engaging residential communities on campus. Residence Hall Directors facilitate student development, help develop a sense of belonging, promote wellbeing, respond to concerns, and support students on their path to degree attainment. Residence Hall Directors are responsible for developing welcoming and inclusive communities that promote the academic, social, and personal growth of residential students. Residence Hall Directors work collaboratively across the Division of Student Affairs and Office of Residence Life to build transformative experiences for Southern students.

Residence Hall Directors work closely with their Resident Advisor student staff and hall council leadership to engage residents in learning around academic skill development, diversity, social justice, and accessibility, mental health and wellbeing, career preparation, sustainability, civic engagement, and personal accountability. They also make living on campus fun and personally rewarding!

A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or Higher Education is preferred. Additional requirements include demonstrated commitment and ability to create just, equitable, inclusive communities where students feel welcomed and supported; strong written and verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills; ability to work collaboratively with others; effective ability to motivate others and build teams; understanding of and commitment to a holistic approach to college student development.

Preferred experience, knowledge, and skills: leadership, supervision, program development and delivery, conflict resolution/restorative justice, and mediation. Those who are passionate about working with college students, intrinsically motivated and able to work in a highly dynamic environment are best suited for this position.
