Job Description
Basic Function:BASIC FUNCTION:
Moreno Valley College is seeking a well-rounded faculty member responsible for instruction in all aspects of English discipline, especially English Composition and Critical Thinking and Writing skills. Successful candidate is expected to directly address equity and student achievement in all classes. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to rotate into the role as a coordinator of one of our learning communities (Puente, Umoja) or teach Dual Enrollment English courses. The successful candidate will work well with others (students, faculty, classified professionals, and administrators) and will fulfill the duties of a full-time faculty member in a shared governance environment. In addition, candidates are expected to integrate innovative pedagogical techniques and technologies in the classroom and are expected to teach face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.

The ideal candidate will share Moreno Valley College's and the District English discipline's commitment to educating its racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population. Moreno Valley College has approximately 15,000 students, of whom 67% are Hispanic and 12% African American. Moreno Valley College has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. Successful candidates are expected to teach English composition, directly addressing equity and student achievement in all classes.

The mission of MVC English discipline is to support the success and equity of all students by providing instruction in writing, argument, critical thinking and inquiry, and literary appreciation. In every classroom, we will honor students' diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and the rich knowledge, skills, and expertise they bring.
Education:EDUCATION:
Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR the equivalent.

(All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions.)
Experience:EXPERIENCE:
We are looking for candidates who (1) have recent experience working with Latinx/Hispanic, African American, Native American and other racially/ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom; (2) possess an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped the experiences and representation of these students within higher education; especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes; (3) demonstrate a willingness to examine and refine instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students; and (4) demonstrate experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

Two years of teaching accelerated, transfer-level, or transfer-level with co-requisite English composition at a community college or baccalaureate level institution is desired. We desire faculty who may be generalists; that is, they may have experience teaching introductory literature survey courses AND experience in teaching College Composition courses.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally responsive pedagogical practices and frameworks for engaging our diverse student population in addition to having the ability to teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and fulfill the duties of a full-time faculty member in a shared governance environment.

Other desirable qualities include experience working with student prog4ams such as Puente or Umoja; teaching or education in Native American Literature, Asian American Literature, Latine Literature, and/or African American Literature; facilitating professional learning for colleagues; and/or teaching Dual Enrollment courses.

Duties and Responsibilities:DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. The instructional assignment will include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach English composition course, and literature course in various platforms (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) as needed.
2. All faculty will participate in outcomes assessment work.
3. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
4. Five hours of Institutional Service activities are expected of all faculty members.
5. Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters are also expected of all department faculty.
6. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
7. Duties may include the co-coordination of the Puente or UMOJA Program, which may include occasional evening and weekends, excursions, college visits, recruitment, and mandatory trainings and events. Coordination will also include the planning and implementation of the Puente mentoring component, and other associated duties to ensure compliance with the state Puente Project or Umoja Community.

1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected.

Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
