Organizational Unit Overview:
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Unit: Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean or Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. Advanced patient care is also provided to patients by participating faculty in the Faculty Practice in Ross Hall.
Job Duties:
The primary purpose of the Radiology Technologist Specialist is to provide both didactic and clinical instruction, to operate digital imaging equipment, to ensure radiology compliance, and to oversee safety protocols and quality assurance.
Instructional/Teaching Didactically and Clinically/Research Duties - 65%
Providing both didactic and clinical instruction for Predoctoral students and residents in radiologic technology, including image acquisition, radiation safety, quality assurance and maintenance of radiologic equipment.

Providing both didactic and clinical instruction for Predoctoral students and residents in radiologic technology, including image acquisition, radiation safety, quality assurance and maintenance of radiologic equipment.
- Participating with the didactic and clinical instruction of predoctoral students that include developing course module lectures and preclinical laboratory sessions.
- Direct supervision of students during imaging sessions that includes XComp scoring of both preclinical and clinical skills assessments and maintaining student radiology experience status.
- Provide clinical orientation and training for predoctoral students and residents.
- Staff and Faculty onboarding for Radiology procedures, processes and quality.
- Coordinate with the ECU Office of Continuing and professional Education to manage and provide instruction for Radiology Certification Course
- Prepare data for research
Clinical Duties -10%
- Operate digital intraoral and extraoral dental imaging equipment, including Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology.
- Establish and maintain guidelines for patient scheduling.
- Establish and maintain infection control practices.
- Prepare patients for imaging, provide pre-procedure instructions about specialized procedures and ensure patient comfort.
- Image patients for screening and general diagnostic studies.
Administrative/Supervision -10%
- Assistance in hiring, supervision, and planning the organization of work of other imaging personnel in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
- Conduct staff annual performance review.
- Interact with vendors to evaluate new supplies and radiographic equipment.
- Establish and maintain par level supply inventory.
- Oversee patient safety protocols: patient identifier, record, and signed consents
Compliance & Quality Assurance -10%
- Scheduling annual visits to all SoDM facilities to perform radiographic unit performance surveys that includes calibration sessions with CSLC staff and perform radiation safety inspection checks.
- Establish and maintain radiology quality assurance program
Technical Support - 5%
- Via remote connection troubleshooting and assisting with imaging acquisition or equipment malfunction with Community Service-Learning Centers that includes assisting patient representatives and the Patient Care Coordinator with importing and exporting images.
- Import and export of images/reports for CBCT reading service and for images received from external sources.
Contingent upon the availability of funding.
- Graduate of an ADA accredited Dental Assistant Program or Registered Dental Hygienist Licensed to practice in the State of North Carolina
- Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in a dental educational environment teaching radiographic technology and techniques
- Certification of completion of an ADA accredited Dental Assistant Program or License as Registered Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina
- Minimum of three years of experience as a Certified Public Health Dental Hygienist
- Community Dental Health Coordinator Certification
