ASL Instructor of Deaf Language and Culture
Required Relevant Education & Experience:
- Master of Arts degree in ASL, ASL Teaching, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a closely related field.
- Hold certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) or the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) (Level 4 or better required).
- ASL fluency and cultural knowledge is required.
- University-level instruction experience
- A strong commitment to teaching language and culture and supporting diversity and inclusion.

Position Details:
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics seeks a full-time ASL Instructor of Deaf Language and Culture beginning August 2025. The successful candidate will be able to teach all levels of American Sign Language and deaf culture, and one Speech Language Pathology course in Sign and Deaf Culture. The applicant must have native or near-native fluency in ASL with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high-level professional and academic conversations.
Master of Arts degree in ASL, ASL Teaching, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a closely related field will be required. Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) or the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) (Level 4 or better required)
Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and Deaf community organizations at local or state levels desirable.
The Department boasts collegial and dynamic faculty who value teaching. It houses unique degree programs, Language Studies and Language Studies Teaching, which allow students to focus in one language and culture, or multiple languages and cultures. The Department also houses programs in English as Second Language and an M.A. program in TESL and Linguistics. The Department sponsors two honors societies, the living-learning community, the Center for Language Education and Research, and hosts numerous cultural and professional events.
The instructor position is a 3-year contract, evaluated annually, with potential for renewal and options for promotion to Senior Instructor. Instructional load is 5 courses each semester; however, the Department recognizes the time commitment in developing curriculum and content for a new program and instructional load can be modified. Instructors have a 10-month academic year contract.
