Position Information

North Dakota State University (NDSU) is seeking a collaborative and accomplished leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies in support of the university's land grant mission. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for the oversight of all matters in the College. 

Primary Duties:

  •      Promoting excellence in graduate education at NDSU
  • Ensuring the quality of graduate education at NDSU continually meets the highest standards at the national level
  • Working with the five academic Deans, departments and their chairs/heads, as well as the graduate faculty, to develop policies and procedures to support and enhance graduate education
  • Advocating for the success and well-being of graduate students
  • Developing a Graduate School Mission and Vision that aligns with NDSU's strategic plans focused on recruitment, retention, research productivity, and our land-grant mission
  • Enhancing and expanding online graduate professional programs
  • Preparing and administering the College's budget and managing staff
  • Working collaboratively with the Development Foundation to secure additional graduate student financial and programmatic support through private and corporate gifts
  • Developing strategies to help programs achieve strong placement in national rankings
  • Supporting the development, implementation, and coordination of all teaching, research, and service activities related to interdisciplinary graduate programs in the College
  • Developing guidance for graduate student success initiatives across the university
  • Working collaboratively with the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity to align graduate education with NDSU's research mission
  • Advocating and promoting the excellence of NDSU's interdisciplinary research clusters
  • Providing testimony and data in support of legislative funding requests
  • Developing and supporting recruiting efforts domestically and internationally
  • Facilitating the monitoring and assessment of all graduate programs, including the establishment of new programs and discontinuance of existing programs
  • Partnering with departments and colleges in the accreditation process
  • Managing the daily operation of the College
  • Working to streamline administrative paperwork associated with graduate education
  • Working with the Graduate Council on matters of graduate and interdisciplinary education
  • Serving as a member of the Deans Council and other committees as assigned
  •       Providing visionary leadership to graduate and interdisciplinary studies in support of NDSU's Strategic Vision
  •       Advancing the status of NDSU as a Research University
  •      Working collaboratively with academic colleges to grow and enrich graduate education
  •      Serving with integrity, transparency, and impartiality
  •       Implementing other activities as assigned by the Provost

Required Qualifications: 

  • A record meriting appointment as a tenured full professor in an academic department at NDSU
  • An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide spectrum of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to incorporating shared governance in decision-making
  • Record of successful supervision and mentoring of graduate students
  • Record of excellence in administrative leadership, including strategic planning, budget management, supervision, and personnel development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to grow graduate education in both quality and quantity
  • Demonstrated ability to secure additional resources through grant writing and fundraising efforts
  • Experience increasing access and opportunity for graduate students
  • Successful implementation of best practices for student success in graduate education 
  • Working knowledge of accreditation processes and procedures relevant to graduate education

About the College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies:

The College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies (CGIS) at NDSU supports approximately 2,000 graduate students across more than 80 graduate programs in five academic colleges: College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Business; College of Engineering; and College of Health and Human Sciences. The Dean supervises a dedicated team of 11 professional staff members to foster academic excellence, graduate recruitment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional growth for graduate students, programs, and faculty, including professional development initiatives such as the Graduate Professional Skills Academy and the Center for Writers. The Dean provides strategic leadership for graduate education across the university as well as administration of seven interdisciplinary graduate programs on Cellular and Molecular Biology, Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Genomics, Phenomics, and Bioinformatics, and Materials and Nanotechnology.
