Position Highlights

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Arizona, Tucson is seeking key research leaders in a variety of cancer and non-cancer related specialties to integrate with initiatives at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center (UAHS). The College of Medicine includes 17 clinical departments and 5 basic science departments. In addition, there are 8 Centers (AZ Arthritis Center, AZ Center for Telemedicine, Sarver Heart Center, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, Thomas D. Boyer Liver Institute, Center on Aging, Valley Fever Center of Excellence, and the University of Arizona Cancer Center). The UACC includes 3 major programs in Cancer Biology, Cancer Prevention and Control, and Clinical and Translational Oncology. Areas of particular interest to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine include, but are not limited to, gastrointestinal cancers and pre-cancers, dermatologic cancer, hematologic malignancies/bone marrow transplant, breast cancer (Ginny L. Clements Breast Cancer Research Institute), as well as new campus-wide initiatives in tissue biobanking.

The Department therefore seeks visionary scientists or physician/scientists to collaborate with investigators in the Arizona Health Sciences Campus and the UACC in particular. Candidates should have an outstanding record of research accomplishments and are expected to bring or develop an active extramurally-funded research program.

These positions will each include a comprehensive start-up package, providing all the resources necessary for success. The selected candidates will have the privilege of working in a highly collaborative environment in newly renovated laboratory space within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and supported by a generous budget for equipment and personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain research in the
    department in collaboration with departmental, UACC, and medical campus
    initiatives.
  • Engage with the clinical units and
    Banner University Medical Group physicians to advance the translational
    aspects of their research program.
  • Participate in the education of
    medical students as well as pathology residents and fellows.
  • Provide clinical
    inpatient/outpatient services with a direct impact on patient care.
  • Participate in clinical practice of the department based on area of expertise.
  • Contribute to teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.

Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience related to area of specialty.
  • Teaching skills.
  • Grant preparation and management skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD with or without clinical
    certification, or MD, DO, MD/PhD, or DO/PhD degree.
  • Experience and funding history in
    basic and translational science.
  • Board Certification in Pathology
    (appropriate subspecialties).
  • Obtain Arizona Medical License by hire date.
  • Meet University of Arizona
    criteria for appointment to a tenure or tenure eligible faculty position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extramural funding.
  • Experience in cancer research, particularly translational studies or biobanking.
  • Track record of unique subspecialty.
  • Experience in programmatic development.
  • Clinical expertise as applicable.
