Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, the Assistant Honors Program Director will play a key role in supporting program goals, student success, and faculty engagement. This position is central to advancing Spelman's commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary learning, and student preparation for prestigious awards and graduate studies.

The Assistant Honors Program Director will support program strategy, curriculum development, and mentorship, ensuring the program's alignment with Spelman's strategic priorities and the broader mission of the college. The role involves advising students on program requirements, offering guidance on graduate and professional school applications, and coordinating with Honors Program Alumnae. This position also requires travel to select conferences and events.


The Assistant Honors Program Director must possess strong research
and writing skills, experience in honors education and advising, and a
background in supporting competitive scholarship preparation. The role also
includes teaching one class per semester, serving as an advisor for the Honors
Program Student Association, and assisting in the selection process for incoming honors students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Advances Honors Program Strategic Initiatives
  • Assists in the development and execution of strategic academic plans that align with Spelman's goals of academic excellence, student engagement, and interdisciplinary learning.
  • Provides tailored advising to honors students on fulfilling program requirements and planning academic and co-curricular experiences, including choices about graduate and professional school applications.
  • Contributes to the development of workshops, seminars, and informational sessions focused on graduate school preparation, fellowship opportunities, and academic writing.
Advises Honors Students and Supports Student Success
  • Guides honors students in identifying and applying for national and international fellowships, connecting them with campus and external resources to support their success.
  • Works with students on navigating the graduate and professional school application process, advising on application strategy, program selection, and essay preparation.
  • Reads and assesses applications for incoming honors students, contributing to the selection process.
Supports Program Operations and Events
  • Collaborates with the Director to manage daily operations, including coordinating honors program events and partnerships that support student academic and professional development.
  • Advises the Honors Program Student Association, fostering student leadership and supporting co-curricular programming aligned with the honors mission.
  • Teaches one course per semester in an area relevant to honors students, promoting academic rigor and interdisciplinary learning within the program.
Builds Relationships with Honors Program Alumnae and Partners
  • Engages with Honors Program Alumnae, coordinating opportunities for them to contribute to program activities and support current students through mentorship and networking.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary faculty committee to ensure honors courses and curricular activities align with program standards and departmental goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree of Fine Arts or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education.
  • Background in advising on prestigious awards and fellowships, with proven success in guiding students through competitive application processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated proficiency in academic writing and research.
  • Proficiency in program development, event planning, and student engagement initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience preferably in honors education, academic advising, or student development.
