Position Summary

The Director provides strategic direction and management of a comprehensive annual giving program to achieve annual goals for centrally managed fundraising appeals benefiting the University of Arizona. S/he also works collaboratively to support and enhance annual giving activities by units and programs and has responsibility for assisting to drive the PAE fundraising pipeline.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Director will be accountable for providing strategic leadership and oversight, performance planning and evaluation, staff training and development, recruitment, and may contribute to recommending pay decisions for their direct reports. The Director is also responsible for oversight of the Telephone Outreach Program and all vendor and contractual compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic plans for donor acquisition, renewal, and reactivation to build the pipeline of major gift prospects in alignment with PAE and University strategic objectives.
  • Develop and execute a solicitation calendar that effectively utilizes all forms of annual giving solicitations including telephone outreach, direct mail, email, and digital.
  • Work closely with the Telephone Outreach Program vendor in maximizing the impact of a year-round, campus-based phonathon.
  • Lead the strategy and execution of the University's annual Giving Day.
  • Supervise staff facilitating direct mail and electronic solicitations. Ensure that all print and electronic solicitations are both effective and appropriately reflect the needs of the institution.
  • Work collaboratively with University development officers, department heads, and deans to effectively communicate the mission, goals, operating procedures, and priorities of the annual giving program. Develop and administer resources and tools to facilitate and support unit-based annual solicitations.
  • Oversee the development of solicitation appeals to enhance fundraising and stewardship efforts.
  • Establish and maintain tracking and testing methods for all solicitation initiatives and adjust strategies based on results of data analysis.
  • Utilize new technologies and techniques to reach a diverse constituent audience.
  • Establish and refine performance metric tracking and standard reporting procedures to monitor and communicate impact of program activities on donor acquisition, retention, and upgrading.
  • Facilitate special giving programs including, but not limited to, faculty staff giving initiative, senior class gift, recent graduate giving, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Record of significant achievement in higher education or non-profits in the area of annual giving and constituency marketing.
  • Proven experience in telemarketing, direct mail, face-to-face, and internet solicitation techniques.
  • Planning and project management experience.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, interpret, and leverage data queries and statistical results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of development and fundraising principles and procedures.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with donors, PAE colleagues, and UA faculty, administration, and staff members.
  • Ability to make good decisions and to exercise good judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
  • Ability to make policy decisions when necessary.
  • Ability to motivate and manage individuals for maximum performance.
  • Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of computer programs including MS Office products and CRM software.
  • Experience leading a team, project, program, or function is required.
  • Experience working with unit development officers, deans, and department directors in administering annual giving initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and;
  • Five (5) years' experience managing/leading a comprehensive annual giving program.

Work Environment

  • This position works in an office environment with close work on a computer.
  • This position may be required to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary.
  • Travel to various offices and departments across campus and/or non-campus locations for Foundation or University business required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
