Mudd Center for Ethics Postdoctoral Fellowship
Washington and Lee University: Roger Mudd Center for Ethics
Location: Lexington, VA
Open Date: Dec 04, 2024
Deadline:
Description
The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship commencing July 1, 2025 and ending June 30, 2027. The Mudd Center is an interdisciplinary hub on the campus of Washington and Lee University. Through year-long thematic explorations, the Center advances dialogue, teaching, and research related to public and professional ethics across the University's three schools: the College; the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics; and the School of Law. Each year, the Mudd Center hosts numerous distinguished scholars, researchers, artists and others to examine a specific theme. Since its establishment in 2010, through a gift from esteemed journalist and W&L alumnus Roger Mudd, the Mudd Center for Ethics has investigated issues from medical ethics and immigration to design and technology. Please see our website for more information.
The Mudd Ethics Postdoctoral Fellow is an integral component of this vibrant community, who serves as part of the Mudd staff and advisory team, but also works as a campus-wide ambassador for the Mudd Center. The individual will contribute to the flow of administrative tasks, assist in the development of yearly themes and associated events at the Mudd Center for Ethics, and attend meetings, events, and lectures sponsored by the Center.
Teaching responsibilities for the postdoctoral fellow include three (three-credit) courses over the academic year, which is comprised of two 13-week terms and one 4-week term.
o Fall term: One section of PHIL 104 Intro to Moral and Political Philosophy.
o Winter term: A seminar related to postdoc's specialty (chosen in consultation with the Mudd Director and the chair of the Philosophy Department).
o Spring term (four-weeks): A seminar related to postdoc's specialty (chosen in consultation with the Mudd Director and the chair of the Philosophy Department).
Alongside these course offerings, the Mudd Postdoctoral Fellow serves as the "faculty advisor" for the Mudd Undergraduate Journal of Ethics, which is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal that publishes undergraduate work on a wide range of topics in ethics. The advisor regularly meets with the student editorial team to help organize workflow and guide their process.
The Mudd postdoc will also have time and resources to advance their own research agenda. To this end, the postdoc will have access to annual conference funds and potential summer research stipends to progress their own research projects.
