The Lemann Center is searching for an Associate Director. Together with the Director, the Lemann Associate Director is responsible for the overall operation of the center, including program development, coordination with other units in the Illinois Global Institute (IGI), grants management, and alumni relations and advancement. The Associate Director is the senior full-time staff member and provides financial oversight for the Center.

Duties & Responsibilities

Center Management

* Under the supervision of the Director and in collaboration with the Executive Committee, shape the programs and overall direction of the Lemann Center's mission.

* Use academic training and experience to help the Center respond to new challenges and opportunities.

* Develop strategic action plans for the Center and assist with unit governance, working with Executive Committee, External Advisory Board, and other stakeholders as needed.

* Hire, train, assign, and supervise the Center's academic hourly staff. Conduct performance reviews, address work issues, set work schedules and goals

* Attend and contribute to weekly center staff meetings.

* Work with other units in IGI and across campus.

* Develop and maintain strong partnerships with the Lemann Center's affiliate faculty.

* Develop and maintain strong partnerships with faculty and students from Brazilian universities.

* Work closely with faculty to ensure that research funding is spent according to stipulations, meet with faculty to learn about current work, and provide feedback to faculty to broaden the Center's impact.

Financial Oversight of Center Budget and Endowment

* Manage budgets and accounts in collaboration with the Director, ensuring sound financial management in compliance with University and State guidelines.

* Manage funds to comply with the mission of the Lemann Center.

* Ensure accuracy of all financial operations through reviewing accounts monthly and working closely with Illinois Global Institute (IGI) administrative staff.

* Direct the transfer of funds between accounts and across campus

* Prepare reports, narratives, and budgets in coordination with the director and center staff.

* Assist in drafting annual reports.

Advancement

* Report to the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) on matters related to gift administration and stewardship in order to maintain the Center's fidelity to endowment and gifts.

* Identify and evaluate external funding opportunities and prepare proposals in collaboration with the Director and LAS Associate Dean.

* Attend meetings with funders, advancement staff, and others as needed.

* Prepare reports and correspondence as required and as necessary to support donor relations.

Fellowship Support

* Be a point of contact for students and handle challenging student academic and personal situations.

* Serve as liaison between students and other campus units.

* Coordinate student funding when necessary.

Contribute to Center Programs and Activity

* Strategize with Director and Senior Program Coordinator to develop Lemann Center event planning.

* Manage the Lemann Faculty Research and Collaboration awards from notice to funding.

* Oversee and manage new projects and programs.

* Attend Lemann events as needed.

Other job duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A total of one (1) year in education, training, and/or work experience in coordinating and/or facilitating area or global studies programs.

    (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in the social sciences, humanities, or related fields, with demonstrated Brazilian-related expertise
  • Advanced language proficiency in Portuguese.
  • Two years of university experience in international programs or previous international program coordination experience.
  • Experience with area studies program administration.
  • Experience with advancement, donor relations, and/or endowments.
  • Proven organizational talents.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and to work independently with minimum guidance.
  • Ability to communication effectively
  • Ability to work harmoniously with faculty, staff, and students from a wide variety of disciplines.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Sensitivity to the functioning of an interdisciplinary program within the context of a complex university.
  • Ability to work independently using discretion, handle confidential matters, and manage complex multi-task projects with minimum guidance.
  • Initiative and creativity in program development.
  • High level of knowledge of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign organization, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong computing skills in appropriate programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $65,000-70,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for Work authorization is not available for this position.
