The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences.

Join us as a Research Programmer at Carnegie Mellon's HCI Institute! Assist in research in math tutoring and learning sciences for the PLUS project, which is focused on doubling math learning for middle school students by combining human and AI tutoring. The successful candidate will be passionate about exploring new technologies, solving complex problems, and using technologies in support of our strategic commitment to deliver high-quality educational experiences that transform lives across diverse communities of students.

For this role, we are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research and product development. All candidates must work individually and as part of multi-site teams, and may also help supervise undergraduate research assistants. Drs. Ken Koedinger and Danielle Thomas will be your mentors. Candidates will also regularly interact with other project faculty, postdocs and PhDs.

Core responsibilities include:
  • Data Analysis and Model Development: Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning models focusing on improving the effectiveness of the PLUS tutoring system. Contribute to building scalable data pipelines and integrating predictive analytics into tutoring interventions.
  • Transcription and Data Preprocessing: Support the preprocessing of audio and video data for research purposes, including assisting with transcription tasks, preparing data for machine learning models, and contributing to automation strategies for data processing.
  • Research and Experimentation: Collaborate on designing and conducting experiments to evaluate the impact of combined human and AI tutoring on student learning outcomes. Assist with the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, and contribute to the preparation of academic publications and presentations.
  • System Prototyping and Testing: Support the iterative development of AI-driven tutoring prototypes, including refining algorithms for adaptive learning and personalized feedback. Conduct usability testing with students and educators to inform system improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Team Collaboration: Work closely with faculty, postdocs, software engineers, and school partners to ensure seamless integration of research insights into practical educational solutions. Contribute to project meetings and present progress updates to stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and Supervision: Assist in mentoring undergraduate research assistants, guiding them on data collection, analysis, and project documentation, ensuring the quality and consistency of their contributions.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, HCI, Applied Stats, Learning Science, or related discipline
  • Proficiency with LLM and transcribing audio data to create LLM's
  • Proficiency in applied machine learning (ML), using Python or similar ML framework
  • ML and data engineering experience (e.g., model training, efficiency optimization, data pipeline design, ML infrastructure)
  • Experience with audio transcription pre-processing a plus
  • Interest in AI in education; experience with learning science a plus
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
