Job Summary

Overview:
The Lowell Bennion Community Engagement Center at the University of Utah is a leader in community engagement and public service. The Bennion Center provides transformative community engagement experiences that make positive impacts on student development and community needs. We support student well-being and success for students as they discover their passion, people, and purpose through our co-curricular programs, initiatives, and events while educating students about their civic and social responsibilities. In 2020, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning classified the University of Utah as a Community Engaged Institution.

Position Summary:
The Student Services Manager supports the Bennion Center's strategic priorities through successful management, oversight, and promotion of U of U student involvement in co-curricular community engagement and student leadership. Responsibilities include mentoring and advising students on how to integrate community engagement into their academic experience; supporting community organizations as co-educational partners in student learning and community impact; and contributing to the vibrancy and success of the Bennion Center. The Community Partner Programs Manager is responsible for building and maintaining successful professional relationships with students, campus and community partners, and the Bennion Center staff.

The Community Partner Programs Manager is part of a dynamic and interconnected team of staff and students, and reports directly to the Associate Director for Student Leadership and Development. The Community Partner Programs Manager is also expected to participate and engage as an active member of Bennion Center and campus-wide committees, task forces, and work groups as necessary and/or requested.

The Student Services Manager must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Responsibilities
Program Administration and Management
  • Manage and enhance the Bennion Center's Community Partner Programs (CPP) including training and support of all student leaders (~60 students) and community partners (~45 community partners)
  • Recruit, interview, onboard, and support all CPP student leaders as well as lead the transition process for exiting students
  • Mentor, train, and directly supervise the Issue Area Coordinators who oversee students within issue areas
  • Mentor and support student Issue Area Coordinators as they onboard, train, and support student partnership liaisons in their respective area
  • Mentor and support student Partnership Liaisons as they coordinate, recruit, and support volunteers for their program in cooperation with their Community Partner (ex: nonprofits, government agencies, campus departments/programs, schools, etc.)
Program Administration and Management (cont.)
  • Build reciprocal relationships with Community Partners and ensure students are filling community identified needs
  • Manage the guidelines, application, acceptance, retention, orientation and onboarding of all new Community Partners
  • Meet with each Community Partner a minimum of three times a year with the student leaders to set program goals and check-in on progress and roadblocks
  • Network with new Community Partners to seek out additional relationships to help fill in gaps in program offerings
  • Provide educational and community engagement opportunities guided by the Civic Pathways
  • Create and implement trainings, policies, forms, tools, and resources for student leaders and program as necessary
  • Provide administrative support for CPPs- maintain records, budget, metrics, and evaluation/assessment information. Create reports as necessary.
  • Records include (but are not limited to): contact records, risk & liability forms, memorandums of understanding, Partnership Liaisons checklist, community partner renewal process, community partner letter of impact
  • Manage and report all programmatic financial matters: budgets, revenue, expenses, receipts, etc.
  • Support student's access to and utilization of programmatic budgets
  • Implement assessment strategies (Bennion Center-wide and program specific as necessary)
Student Development and Leadership
  • Create, inspire, and support a cadre of strong student leaders committed to Community Partner Programs
  • Encourage, educate, and mentor students in the development of their civic competencies, leadership skills, professional skills, and personal growth.
  • Provide leadership and support to Issue Area Coordinators, Partnership Liaisons and other student leaders to establish objectives, implement/improve processes, and set/meet/adjust goals
  • Actively work to cultivate a sense of belonging on campus and in the community
Education and Training
  • Contribute to the Bennion Center's educational efforts
  • Advise students on co-curricular community engagement opportunities
  • Provide regular student training opportunities throughout the year
  • Provide opportunities for students to focus passion and energy and provide input and leadership on issue-related education, training modules, coordinator and director meetings, and general Bennion Center-wide events
  • Understand and effectively communicate all parts of the Bennion Center to internal and external audiences
Bennion Center - General
  • Adhere to and foster the Bennion Center's values of hope, integrity, collaboration, and action in all professional and programmatic matters
  • Assist in the planning, logistics, and implementation of orientations, retreats, recognition events, reflection opportunities for the Bennion Center community
  • Represent the Bennion Center across campus and in the community
  • Support the Bennion Center's strategic plan
  • Stay up to date on innovative strategies for community engagement, partnerships and advancing the public purpose of higher education
  • May be asked to participate as an instructor for BENN courses as necessary

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.
