Job Description

*

Directly supervises and assists with inspections, repairs, installations, and maintenance of landscape irrigation systems.

Duties:

  • Receives instructions from the crew leader to point out irrigation problem areas.
  • Responds to calls from other landscape personnel and campus police.
  • May use maps, blueprints, or own knowledge of campus.
  • Assists with assessment of the problem and uses various tools to facilitate inspection of the irrigation system.
  • Assists with repairs of valves to include but not limited to, valve body, bonnet, diaphragm and solenoid, sprinkler heads, and large and small leaks.
  • Responsible for back-filling ground holes of 18 to 24 inches and periodically inspects ground holes where there are concerns of low-voltage electrical shorts.
  • Assists with installing new irrigation systems that supply water to newly landscaped areas on campus and to other customers of landscape services. Trenches area using various tools and equipment. Assists with the installation of pipes, valves, quick couplers, irrigation heads emitters, low-voltage wires, and control boxes. Assists with back-filling ground holes.
  • Programs ad tests computerized landscape irrigation systems. Adjusts satellite stations to ensure each one is functioning properly.
  • Assists with shutting down and turning on irrigation systems as deemed necessary by environmental conditions as directed by a supervisor. Expels existing water in pipes and inspects heat tape on back-flow preventers to ensure proper working order. Assists with re-setting timers on the irrigation system.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Prepares order forms for materials needed to repair defective watering systems. Contacts vendors to locate and price needed materials.
  • May assist with shoveling snow and ice on sidewalks and parking lots and uses salt or other materials in areas where it is deemed necessary.
  • May assist with planting flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Performs other duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Schedule Note:

Winter Schedule (the day following Labor Day through Memorial Day): 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Summer Schedule (the day following Memorial Day through Labor Day): 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM



Job Requirements

Required Education: High School diploma or GED

Required Experience: None

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in order to exchange information or give instructions
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics or technical manuals
  • Uses appropriate tools or equipment with expertise

Certifications:

  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days from hire date

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Physical: Regular exposure to physically demanding tasks such as digging, heavy lifting, bending and stooping, considerable use of arms, hands and leg movement.

  • Environmental: Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Exposure to extreme temperature changes. Handling dirty materials. May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies. May be required to work outside of normal working hours.
