Position Highlights
The African American Museum of Southern Arizona (AAMSAZ) at the University of Arizona seeks to hire the Director of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona. This highly visible, community-engaging role seeks a dynamic leader confident in relationship building and fundraising. The role will require a continuation of the momentum of the museum's significant achievements, building upon its strong foundation, driving continual growth, and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
AAMSAZ is on the university's campus and has received community, state, and national accolades. The community it serves is not just the campus but enjoyable for all people interested in learning African American history, which is American history. This community outreach professional is the face of the museum, a conduit accountable for fundraising, grant writing, educating, and solving social justice initiatives to support the African American community.
This position leans on collaboration and relationships to present historical stories. It cultivates relationships within the local community and beyond to bring new artifacts and education to maintain the museum's sustainability. It has one direct report and interns to operate and function and resides under the Research Innovation and Impact department at the University of Arizona.

- Lead daily operations of museum.
- Operations & Programming and manage organization within annual operating budget.
- Lead staff and volunteers by establishing clear expectations and providing oversight and guidance of day-to-day operations.
- Manage partnerships with municipalities, community partners, and other key constituents.
- Develop effective systems and processes to strengthen programmatic, fundraising, financial, and administrative operations, including the curation of exhibits and artifacts.
- Maintain a strong sense of teamwork and foster a positive and productive working environment.
- Manage conflicts and solve problems.
- Identify and mitigate organizational risk.
- Collect data to analyze and provide strategy for effectiveness to the Board.
- Drive Fundraising & Revenue Growth in Partnership with the community and university.
- Implementation of the annual fundraising plan to support financial sustainability and growth.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and recognize donors, volunteers, and partners.
- Deliver compelling communications (including the newsletter) that increase understanding of vision and mission.
- Identify new and potential grant opportunities, write proposals, and submit timely reports.
- Identify other opportunities for revenue generation that align with and support mission.
- Manage partnerships with community partners and organizations.
- Educational programming
- Designing lessons based on exhibitions for K-12.
- Educate visitors.
- Provide Strategic Leadership for the museum in Partnership with the Board.
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a multi-year strategic plan.
- Support the growth, development, and diversification of the Board of Directors.
- Sole internal oversight of the museum and its success in day-to-day operations while reporting to the AVP of Research Centers & Institutes
- Additional duties may be needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required and a minimum 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with volunteers who can engage with diverse populations
- Experience working in a multicultural setting and possessing high cultural competency
- 3+ years of nonprofit leadership and management experience
- Experience working in a museum, museum history
- Experience with curating exhibits
- Experience with educating and/or developing and implementing educational programming in a K-16 environment

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims.
