Position Summary

The Director for Counseling & Health Services reports to the Assistant Vice President for Health & Wellbeing (AVP) and serves as a leader to provide transformative strategy, vision, multidisciplinary and data-informed approach, and operational leadership to develop, inspire, and lead a robust health services program and a comprehensive student-centered counseling program. As a leadership team member, this position collaborates in a cross-divisional and cross-institutional approach to provide oversight of individual and group counseling, health services, health prevention programs, and human growth and development activities for students in a thriving campus life environment that contributes to the holistic success of students.

The Director provides leadership and management of the operating budget and office grants and is responsible for part-time and full-time student staff. The Director has oversight for promoting student growth through a comprehensive counseling program and wellness through a non-emergency health services center. In collaboration with other university and community agencies, wellness and prevention programs will be provided. the Director will seek continuous and integrated improvements on all such matters and collaborating with campus partners to achieve Division goals.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory leadership
  • Provide supervision and leadership to the Counseling & Health Services office.
  • Oversee the hiring, supervision and mentorship, training, and professional development of health services and counseling staff, including clinical supervision of counselors, interns to achieve division goals.
  • Conduct performance reviews on an annual basis; developmentally coach members to success with a strengths-based approach.
  • Provide recommendations for staff member merit as determined and available.
  • Lead staff meetings with team members within designated scope of supervision.
Counseling & Health Services
  • Provide administrative oversight of all aspects of the University's comprehensive student-oriented health services clinic and counseling program.
  • Lead a comprehensive student-centered counseling program that provides individual, and/or group counseling to currently enrolled students.
  • Lead a non-medical emergency health services program that provides non-acute care, diagnostic testing, and non-emergency medical care.
  • Provide intake, triage, and other mental health assessments to ensure optimal delivery of services.
  • Assist clients in identifying and utilizing other campus resources and services related to student success and well-being. Provide referrals to off-campus providers for students who require more specialized services.
  • Oversee development, implementation, and review of Student Counseling and Health Services policies and procedures.
  • Partner with colleagues within the department, across campus, and at other member institutions and throughout the region to optimize delivery of services. Recruit additional resources and deploy as needed.
Outreach and Prevention Programming
  • Direct the creation of mental health and preventive health campus-wide programming.
  • Oversee all aspects of development and promotion of campus-wide health programs and seminars for students.
  • Strategically, and collaboratively, lead the planning of mental health awareness week.
  • Lead an innovative and engaging campus strategy that boosts student mental health and wellness.
  • Work with leadership to develop and implement policies and procedures that support a healthy wellbeing of students.
  • Research, write and obtain external funding from grants, foundations, and other gifts in kind.
  • Responsible for the successful completion of the Biennial Drug Free School Act Report.
  • Responsible for fostering an open partnership while collaborating across campus and with the local community to ensure a holistic, integrated approach to student support.
Department and Division Leadership
  • Maintain open communications with the Assistant Vice President for Health & Wellbeing to share information and engage in issue-spotting and creative problem-solving to benefit the University community.
  • Serve as a key leader in assisting the University's response in a crisis, including outreach and support to students and their families.
  • Provide consultation to faculty/staff on mental health awareness.
  • Collaborate with campus partners on development and programming opportunities.
  • Identify organizational and cultural changes needed to adapt strategically to changing market and technological demands.
  • Coordinate timely and accurate preparation of reports, budgets, and contracts.
  • Stay informed and educate the University community and stakeholders as needed regarding issues, trends, and regulations affecting the mental health and health services.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to apply innovation and creativity to address areas of improvement and growth.
  • Serve on the council leadership team within the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Participate in related professional organizations for continuing development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in appropriate field, and at least four (4) years of related experience as a full-time professional; with at least two (2) years of leading a department or area as a Director or Assoc./Asst. Director within any of the following areas: counseling, health services, care coordination, and/or wellness programming.
  • Licensed Psychologist/Counselor or eligible for licensure in Tennessee; or can transfer licensure upon employment, from an accredited APA/CACREP or similarly accredited program.
  • Knowledge of best practices within counseling and health services centers/programs at a university or college;
  • Leadership skills that exemplify collaboration, communication, action and advocacy.
  • Ability to lead, develop, and work with a diverse staff.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to administer multiple deadlines and tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and assess data.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
Complementing the required skills and qualifications:
  • Earned Doctorate in Counseling, Psychology or related field and at least six (6 )years of related experience as a full-time professional; with at least four (4 ) years of leading a department or area as a Director or Assoc./Asst. Director within any of the following areas at a higher education institution: counseling, health services, care coordination, and/or wellness programming.
  • Member of ACCA/ACA.
  • Experience with leading special initiatives, programs, and strategic planning.
