The Airport Operations position at the University of Oklahoma's Max Westheimer Airport entails managing daily airport activities to ensure safety, security, and efficiency in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Directs or conducts the Airport Maintenance & Safety Program including daily inspections of runways, taxiways, ramps, lights, markings and maintenance checks of hangars. Ensures adequate follow-up is taken on noted deficiencies and assures appropriate Notices To Airmen (NOTAM's) are issued and or cancelled in a timely fashion. Maintains related records. Conducts quarterly sampling of storm water run-off in accordance with the airport Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan.

  • Communicates directly with aeronautical users concerning airport operations, and enforces federal, state, and local directives. Coordinates activities relating to airport operations, as needed, with other University departments and federal and state agencies. Responsible for aeronautical studies associated with changes in the airspace environment.

  • Carries out responsibilities associated with the Airport Emergency Plan. Responds to aircraft accidents, incidents, emergencies and associated reports including 24-hour on-call duty and ability to respond to an airport emergency within 30 minutes of notification. Assists the on scene commander during aircraft accidents and locates source of Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT's).

  • Develops and recommends policy and procedure changes to airport directives, such as rules and regulations and emergency plans. Assists in the formation of new directives, including University and departmental regulatory guidelines. Reviews revisions to Instrument Approach Procedures, Airport/Facility Directories, etc., and initiates required corrective actions. Aids in the enforcement of Airport Rules and Regulations.

  • Coordinates FCC licensing agreements (AWOS, ATCT and NDB). Participates in Chamber of Commerce Aviation meetings.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.


Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree, AND:

  • 48 months of related airport managerial experience

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 96 months of related experience.

Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics, or technical manuals.
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Detail-oriented for accuracy of data and information.
  • Must be able to read and interpret policy as well as State and Federal regulations.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Strong initiative to solve problems.
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives.

Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License to drive airport vehicles.

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions.
  • Must regularly stand, bend, and stoop.
  • Climb stairs. Wear and maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, odors, and noise.
  • Work will be 50% inside, 50% outside.

Supervision: Will supervise one part-time employee during the summer. Position primarily works independently, directly reporting to the Airport Administrator.
