Summary of Position

Red Rocks Community College seeks applications for a full-time faculty position to join our Fire Science Technology Department. The salary range for this position is $63,945 to $74,771, commensurate with education and experience. This salary is based on 180 contract days within an academic year. The projected start date for this position is January 31, 2025; salary will be prorated based on the number of contract days worked. This is a full-time, FLSA exempt position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

The successful candidate will fulfill the teaching, professional development, and service obligations of full-time faculty in the Fire Science Technology department at the College in accordance with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Colorado Community College System and Red Rocks Community College. A faculty assignment is comprised of two parts, one being the predominant duties as a teacher, which may include program coordination/development and the other is professional development and service obligations.

Essential Responsibilities

Instruction: Teach day, evening, or weekend courses and/or teach in any modality including in-person classroom-based courses, hybrid, remote, hyflex, concurrent, or online, ensuring that all courses meet the approved course outcomes and outlines. Instruction duties and responsibilities center on teaching excellence, which can include:
  • Learning and applying culturally responsive education and inclusive learning environments into classroom instruction and curriculum.
  • Demonstrating equity and inclusion skills that are measurable, student-focused, and support equity in achieving learning outcomes.
  • Active student engagement empowers learners to think critically and achieve academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Robust instructional content that is thought-provoking, current and relevant.
  • Meaningful assessment and timely feedback related to student progress in achieving learning outcomes.
  • Continuous improvement of teaching and learning through evidence-based practices, reflection, innovation, and collaboration; and other College priorities.
Service: Service includes fulfilling the mission and goals of the College outside of the classroom. These may include but are not limited to:
  • Departmental service, including curriculum coordination and development.
  • Advising and outreach.
  • Administrative assignments and committee work at a campus- level, college, or System-wide.
  • Sponsoring and participating in student activities or community service events related to the College and tied to personal professional goals and job responsibilities.
Professional development activities are a part of service. Activities include:
  • Continuous improvement in teaching.
  • Best practices in higher education as related to college initiatives.
  • Maintaining expertise in the field.
  • Personal enrichment in higher education structure or leadership.
  • Professional Development: A commitment to ongoing professional development, including staying current with developments in the field, and participating in training opportunities, is important for maintaining excellence in teaching and mentoring.
Additional activities may include serving as the College representative on a local board or commission, making community or professional presentations, serving as a liaison to local schools, or serving as an elected or appointed member of local boards as a representative of the College.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
  • Associate degree in Fire Science/Fire Protection/Fire Administration, Emergency Management, Fire Investigation or related field AND has, or qualifies for, post-secondary CTE credential including 4000 paid non-teaching occupational hours within the last 7 years
OR must have attained National Industry License or certification in the appropriate occupational area. Ex: FFI FFII, EMT with IV Authorization, Haz Mat, Driver/Operator Certification AND one year (full-time equivalent) as a facilitator of fire skills training.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Baccalaureate degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management Planning, Public Safety Administration, Education, or related field.
  • Proficient in curriculum development, supervision, instruction, evaluation, and academic advising.
  • Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of students and staff from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented in the College.
  • Three years in an academic leadership role in a community college or similar academic setting.
  • Experience with program assessment, strategic planning, and grant funded initiatives.
  • Experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of individuals from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to work from campus (primarily our Lakewood campus, the Arvada satellite campus, or any other location the fire academy is being conducted).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and typically underrepresented groups.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom where appropriate.
  • Knowledge of computer applications. Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of instructional objectives and course development techniques.
  • Skills with managing, preparing, and delivering courses in the classroom and in the field.
  • Knowledge of Fire Science and Emergency Management Planning education and licensure regulations and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of subject material and course content related to Fire Science and Emergency Management
  • Knowledge of fire terminology and fire behavior.
  • Knowledge of standards, regulations, and laws pertaining to fire science, emergency mgt including those pertaining to the Colorado Fire Service, Certification System, and the NFPA.
  • Knowledge of computer applications.
  • Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of instructional objectives and course development techniques.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skills with managing, preparing, and delivering courses in the classroom and in the field.
  • Ability to give and receive oral and written instructions and procedures.
Physical and Cognitive Demands: The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position:
  • Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports classroom and office equipment and supplies weighing up to 10 lbs.

Department Information: The Red Rocks Community College Fire Academy provides an intensive instructional program that satisfies the certification requirement to take the State Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Firefighter I exam. The Academy's rigorous instruction includes lectures at RRCC by seasoned firefighters, and hands-on practicals.

Work Environment and Typical Work Schedule: Work is performed in a classroom setting conducting lectures, or in an office setting meeting with students, colleagues and preparing materials. Must be able to teach day, evening and/or weekend classes at the Lakewood campus or satellite campus in Arvada. Attendance at various off campus events and some travel may be required.
