The Department of Internal Medicine and Jared Grantham Kidney Institute (KI) are recruiting faculty candidates with expertise and funding in basic science and/or translational kidney research. The successful candidate will have a growing and/or successful research program and desire to teach and mentor diverse learners.
Job Description:
Position Overview
- Conduct research in collaboration with existing faculty, departments and centers at KUMC.
- Pursue new funding opportunities which contribute to the programmatic missions of the Jared Grantham Kidney Institute.
- Teach and mentor postdocs and IGPBS graduate students.
- Participate in seminars, workshops and committees as a member of the Kidney Institute.
Education: Ph.D., and/or M.D. or equivalent degree.
Work Experience:
- Prior teaching experience.
- Strong record of extramural funding and peer reviewed scholarship as evidenced by application materials.
The Department of Internal Medicine
The mission for The Department of Internal Medicine is to advance the power of medicine by providing a stimulating, supportive climate where faculty, scientists, trainees and support staff strive for excellence and collaborate freely to achieve shared goals. The Department is made up of fourteen divisions and has experienced tremendous growth in the past seven years. The Department has a thriving and rapidly expanding research portfolio that spans the entire spectrum of basic and clinical research from genes and molecules to translation of discoveries in the community. With a new Research Office, the Department has witnessed unsurpassed enthusiasm and support for research over the past year. Internal Medicine active grant funding is over $43M.
The Jared Grantham Kidney Institute (KI)
The KI is a world-class, cross-departmental research center comprised of 32 faculty investigators, including clinician-scientists and basic scientists from five departments: Internal Medicine, Cell Biology and Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics, and Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Extramural funding to KI faculty amounts to $10 million annually. The KI is home to the Kansas PKD Research and Translation Core Center (Kansas PKD RTCC; Darren Wallace, PhD, Director), one of three NIH/NIDDK-funded U54 PKD RTCCs that make up the national PKD Research Resource Consortium (PKD-RCC). The KI has interactions with the NCI-Designated Cancer Center and Liver Center and collaborates with other nearby entities including the KU-Lawrence, KC VA Hospital, Children's Mercy Hospital, University of Missouri - Kansas City, and Stowers Institute for Medical Research. The KI sponsors weekly seminars on basic and clinical kidney research and hosts an annual Jared Grantham Symposium to highlight future directions in PKD research. The overall scientific and institutional environment greatly contributes to the success of translational research in PKD and other kidney disorders. The KI consists of 23,000 sq ft of dedicated space on the 5th and 6th floors of Cates Hall with open laboratory design and proximity to the Division of Nephrology.
