Associate Vice President & Chief Risk Officer - Enterprise Risk Management
Carnegie Mellon University seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and visionary industry leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer. The Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) at CMU will lead the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department including 25 staff members and oversee a $4.6 million Emergency Risk Management portfolio, with 5 direct reports to the position.
The Associate Vice President (AVP) and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) will lead and oversee CMU's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department, reporting to the university's vice president for operations. ERM provides the governance, framework, and guidance to assist and support campus leadership and stakeholders in identifying events that have the potential to impact the CMU community both positively and negatively and to manage risks associated with those events. This role has direct leadership and engagement in managing the university's Enterprise Risk, Travel Risk, and Compliance Management Programs. Additionally, this role oversees and provides leadership to Environmental Health and Safety, Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, and Emergency Preparedness and Response.
The CRO is responsible for periodically communicating the university's risk priorities to Executive Management and the Board of Trustees. The CRO serves as an objective and unbiased advisor to risk owners and stakeholders. They support the strategic objectives of the university through organizational resiliency practices and provide risk intelligence to inform strategic decision-making.
In addition, the Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer will:
- Assess and implement effective business continuity and disaster recovery measures across CMU.
- Develop and deploy the core ERM toolset including risk identification, assessment, prioritization, mitigation, monitoring, reporting templates, and communication tools.
- Enhance Emergency Response Procedures, including broad-based training and designation of responsibilities and improved emergency protocols.
- Establish and maintain a governance framework that includes a local risk perspective and escalates critical risk intelligence to executive leadership.
- Identify safety concerns and regularly convene stakeholders to ensure holistic awareness and coordination of mitigation activities.
- Lead projects to develop and execute risk reduction strategies for key strategic initiatives Maintain the risk inventory and periodically update CMU's enterprise risk profile for discussion with executive management and the Board of Trustees.
- Partner with education leaders to provide periodic risk education.
- Partner with risk champions to understand key drivers or risks, and strategies to address these risks.
- Work with risk owners to complete periodic risk analysis and develop risk documentation and reporting, including for regulatory requirements that the University is subject to.
- Work with University Police to develop a campus awareness and action education program.

Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
- Experience: 15+ years of experience in Risk Management is required.
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Additional Information:
- This is a full-time, exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA.
- May be required to be on call and work irregular or extended work hours to include, but not limited to, overtime, emergency hours, nights and weekends.

CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
