Job Description
Environmental Health and Safety has an opportunity for a Fire and Life Safety Specialist. In addition to other duties as assigned, the Fire and Life Safety Specialist will:
- Inspect campus buildings for safety and fire code compliance
- Provide plan review to construction planners to assess fire code compliance
- Participate in construction project meetings and contribute to safety reviews
- Consult with campus partners on questions related to fire code
- Coordinate with Campus Facilities to ensure fire and life safety system testing and certification
- Prepare building emergency evacuation plans
- Develop and implement fire and emergency plans and drills
- Provide education to campus partners on fire safety
- Review and investigate fire incidents
- Prepare documents for Cleary Act reporting
- Engage with the Kansas City Fire Department on campus emergency response
- A Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area or equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
- A Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Industrial Safety, or a closely related field.
- Two or more years of experience in the inspection of facilities for conformance to fire and building codes.
- State of Missouri Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification, or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector or Fire Marshal certification.
- Solid understanding of ICC codes (IBC/IFC) and NFPA standards including NFPA 101.
- Ability to read blueprints, building specifications, floor plans, and similar materials.
- Knowledge of modern methods, practices and techniques of fire prevention.
