Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for an Instructional Design Project Manager to join our Center for Professional Education team. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Professional Education, the Instructional Design (ID) Project Manager demonstrates expert knowledge in instructional design and media and applies best practices to create highly effective and engaging online learning experiences in a variety of subject areas to include engineering, technology, business, and healthcare. The ID Project Manager represents a highly collaborative and goal-oriented instructional design professional with significant experience in developing industry-informed, online educational experiences through interdisciplinary teams to include faculty, subject matter experts, staff, independent contractors, and other stakeholders. The ID Project Manager also leads the development of stackable, skills-based non-degree digital credentials utilizing both internal and external resources and will work in collaboration with regional higher education institutions to advance the development of microcredentials as part of a federal grant project.

As a member of the Center for Professional Education (CPE) team, the ID Project Manager works to manage projects and oversee design for timely delivery and quality assurance under tight timelines. The ID Project Manager also contracts with and oversees the work of independent instructional and media design professionals to support the development and maintenance of a growing array of online courses and programs. In addition, the ID Project Manager provides support to the noncredit instance of the campus learning management system and the digital platform for issuing and tracking badges to recognize learning achievements. Our ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education, an appetite for transformational learning initiatives, and a proven track record of getting things done.

Essential Job Functions

  • Stays current with trends in online education and educational technology to leverage opportunities for innovation in and expansion of a variety of engaging online learning experiences.
  • Collaborates with faculty, CPE program managers, and other stakeholders in the design and development of high-impact online learning programs and materials supporting nontraditional and professional learners.
  • Defines objectives and outlines concepts for courses, defining the course medium, content delivery, assessments, accompanying materials, and complementary learning approaches.
  • Works with video production and graphics sources to produce course material and assist as needed with production and editing.
  • Manages intake and organization of digital assets throughout course development process.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert in alternative digital credential development and delivery to include, but not limited to, microcredentials.
  • Provides support to the HERA Microcredentials Project through an external contract.
  • Adheres to and educates others on the established MSOE CPE Guidelines for Developing and Awarding Alternative Digital Credentials.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective and responsive pool of independent contractors providing instructional design and media supports, as required, to support and advance program development and growth. Formalizes work-for-hire agreements with contractors with clear deliverables and monitors and evaluates work.
  • Provides support to the noncredit instance of the learning management system and digital badging platform.
  • Manages multiple complex product development and improvement projects simultaneously.
  • Formalizes and monitors individual online course development plans identifying key milestones, resources and deliverables for each of the Centers online offerings to ensure high-quality and efficient course development under tight timelines.
  • Meets routinely with program managers to keep projects on track, and to discuss and implement strategies for continuous quality improvement of programs, content and materials.
  • Contributes to program planning and evaluation efforts as a member of the CPE team.
  • Identifies resources needed (both internal and external) to ensure deadlines are met and quality standards achieved.
  • Applies University brand standards and design principles, and accessibility strategies for online learning to ensure ADA compliance.

  • Participate in and/or provide subject area support to internal and external projects and planning initiatives as assigned.
  • Engage in regular professional development opportunities as approved.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience related to instructional design or technology, educational development, online learning preferably in a college or university setting, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Three (3) plus years of supervisory or team leadership experience required.
  • Knowledge of research and best practices in online education.
  • Experience managing initiatives/projects.
  • Instructional design skills and knowledge of adult learning principles and best practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of learning theories and their implementation in online education.
  • Demonstrated creativity and attention to detail.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to design and develop online programs and learning resources.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working within a learning management system in the role of developer and/or technical support.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written, interpersonal and presentation communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish goals, meet deadlines, organize workflow and projects.
  • Must possess effective teamwork, organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated professional presence and maturity in dealing with a variety of audiences, external and internal to the university.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service to others.
  • Ability to work effectively on a high-performance team.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently working out-of-office engaging with business partners at the worksite.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
