Purpose of Position
The Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry at Christopher Newport University invites applications for one lecturer position in Biology (Kinesiology), effective August 2025. The Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Biology, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Lecturer. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to their success. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment, or someone who has a master's degree in a relevant field may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Promotion to an advanced Lecturer rank is possible.
The University seeks a teacher-scholar committed to undergraduate education who will engage a diverse group of students in creative intellectual challenges. Individuals with disciplinary expertise in biomechanics are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant must be able to support the growth and development of a new major in Kinesiology and teach courses such as Introduction to Kinesiology, Nutrition, Biostatistics, Biomechanics, Motor Learning, or Anatomy and Physiology and contribute to the Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology major. The successful applicant may have the opportunity to develop courses in the candidate's area of expertise, teach lower division courses in our Liberal Learning curriculum, Honors Program, and support the M.S. in Environmental Science. The nominal teaching load for this appointment is 4-4.
Departmental Information
The Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry is composed of 24 faculty members and is housed in the $80 M integrated science building that includes dedicated research space for faculty in three departments and has kinesiology equipment and instruments including treadmills, ergometers, body composition analyzer, a metabolic cart, and a force plate. A new building with dedicated space for Kinesiology is set to open in Spring 2026. We also have over $2 M of chemical instrumentation, including modern spectroscopy instruments, a high resolution LC-MS, a 400 MHz NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, ICP-OES, DSC, spectrofluorophotometer temperature-controlled cell, confocal microscopy, real-time thermocycler, and a variety of molecular biology equipment as well as a vivarium. The department oversees roughly 450 students who are in pursuit of the B.S. degree in Biology with majors in both Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology and Kinesiology and the B.S. degree in Chemistry with majors in both Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department works in conjunction with the Psychology department to support the B.S. degree in Neuroscience through the Neuroscience program.
