Job Description

The Assistant Vice Provost of Retention Initiatives is a key leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing strategies designed to improve student retention and persistence to graduation. This individual will lead university-wide efforts to support student success by addressing retention challenges, improving the student experience, and creating policies and programs that foster student engagement and success. The Assistant Vice Provost will oversee academic advising, academic support and mentoring, and career services as well as development and implementation of a more robust new student onboarding experience. This position will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders to build a data-driven and student-centered approach to retention initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise directors of Undergraduate Academic Advising (Roo Advising), Academic Support and Mentoring, and Career Services, promoting their professional development and oversight of their office budgets.

  • Lead efforts to improve the first-year student experience, including implementation of a comprehensive new student onboarding experience that includes summer orientation.

  • Develop and/or expand knowledge on national retention trends, challenges, and best practices and analyze our institution's retention trend, challenges, and at-risk populations.

  • Oversight, assessment of and improvements to retention initiatives and interventions, providing reports and updates to senior leadership on progress toward goals.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders such as student affairs, academic units/faculty, and international student affairs to align retention efforts across the university.

A Master's degree in a relevant area and 10 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired OR a Bachelor's degree in a relevant area and 12 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

  • Doctoral degree in higher education administration, student affairs, educational leadership, or a related field

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, specifically in areas related to student retention, academic support, or student success.

  • Demonstrated experience using data to inform strategic decision-making and develop programs that enhance student retention and academic success.

  • Proven track record of developing and managing retention programs, with an emphasis on collaboration with academic and student affairs units.
Anticipated Hiring Range

$106,090 - $122,000 annually commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
