Position Highlights
This position reports to the Sr. Director of Research and Discovery Technologies (RT) and is responsible for leadership in the architecting, managing, and operations of the University's Research Computing services and infrastructure (both on-prem and in the Cloud). The Lead Architect leads the work of the RT infrastructure work team, which is responsible for the university's enterprise research computing services infrastructure, including but not limited to High Performance Computing (HPC), Controlled and Regulated Research Services (ITAR/CUI/HIPAA/PHI), and data center operations. This position is part of RT's leadership team and works collaboratively and in partnership with other members of the leadership team.Research and Discovery Technologies supports the University's research mission by providing the key IT services and infrastructure capacity for the scale of data-intensive research at an R1 institution. Key offerings include High-Performance Computing (HPC), the Controlled and Regulated Research Services Program (CRRSP), and research data management / storage services. The unit promotes a culture of service to the UA research community, and through this service-focused approach, better enables data intensive research by promoting the services and solutions that allow research to be more efficient, more effective, and more secure.
Due to federal requirements related to the team's services in support of research requiring Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), ITAR, and the upcoming CMMC 2.0 standard, this position is limited to U.S. Citizens.
Candidates working anywhere in the U.S. may be considered for a remote assignment.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads the
planning, engineering, operations, and maintenance of the University's
Research Computing infrastructure, including but not limited to: HPC Systems,
Controlled and Regulated Research Computing environments, and data storage
solutions. Infrastructure for Research Computing is both on-prem and in the
cloud. - Understands complex requirements and contributes to an overall vision
of IT architecture in support of research computing. - Administers
and supports current production and development systems including
maintenance, configuration, installation, and troubleshooting. - Acts as point
with vendors to resolve trouble tickets as they arise. - Provides systems
programming support as needed. - Keeps
current with emerging technologies in the research computing landscape, and
as part of the RT leadership team, leads IT architecture strategy in support
of research computing at the UA. - In partnership with key research
stakeholders throughout the UA, leads in the architecting and when
appropriate the implementation of IT infrastructure in support of research
activities. - Participates
on the Research and Discovery Technologies Leadership Team, and contributes
to the strategic planning and operational priorities for RT. - Provides data architecture support for Faculty Profiles system.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of related work experience.
- Or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- U.S. Citizen
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HPC systems administration, including Rocky Linux, SLURM, and other HPC systems applications (such as XDMoD, MPI).
- Experience with configuration management systems (Ansible, Puppet, Salt).
- Experience with scripting (Python, Perl) and LDAP/MySQL integration.
- Experience with SQL.
- Experience with architecting, deploying, and administrating AWS environments.
- Experience with on-prem enterprise storage solutions, such as Qumulo.
- Experience working with faculty and researchers in support of their research activities.
- Experience with information security practices, including risk assessments.
- Experience with Splunk reporting.
- Experience with HIPAA / PHI controls and requirements
- Experience with CUI/ITAR, NIST 800-171 controls and requirements.
- Experience with Globus.
- Experience with University Enterprise Data Systems.
- Experience with software license management.
- Experience with Microsoft Active Directory.
- Experience administrating 389 LDAP directory service.
- Experience with DevOps development (infrastructure as code, version control, etc).

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses.
