Job Description Summary:
The Gastroenterology and Hepatology division is seeking an experienced research assistant to join our team. This position involves a range of technical duties, including conducting biochemical and other laboratory tests and experiments to gather data for research purposes. Responsibilities include performing experiments, analyzing, documenting, and drawing preliminary conclusions from experimental results. The research assistant will collaborate with the principal investigator to design and perform experiments with a limited supervision to accommodate specific equipment needs, perform data analyses and reporting.

Job Duties Outlined:
- Conduct biochemical, and other research laboratory tests, experiments, and determinations to obtain data for research purposes.
- Compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results.
- Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments.
- Make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the equipment as required.
- Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
- Perform routine laboratory techniques and support laboratory operations (general laboratory duties, inventory, laboratory safety, regulatory and compliance).
- Maintenance of adequate lab supplies, reagents, and chemicals for daily research procedures.
- Perform specimen processing, biobanking and shipments.
- Perform collaborative studies with other research laboratories at KUMC.
- Perform PCR, Western blot, ELISA, primary cell isolation, general tissue culture.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline. Experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience: One year of previous lab experience (can be gained through relevant coursework and studies).

- Three years of direct laboratory experience in basic cell and molecular biology methods which includes but not limited to DNA/RNA manipulation, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, immunodetection (IHC/IF/western blotting), immunoprecipitation, microscopy, and CRISPRs/siRNA/shRNA.
- Experience working with rodents.
- Must demonstrate excellent organizational, oral, and written skills and ability to communicate effectively.
- Must be able to work independently and take a leading role on assigned projects, under supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to changing situations.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
