Position Summary

The Director of Campus Recreation at Metropolitan State University of Denver is responsible for the development and administrative oversight of the department while providing leadership and direction in support of its mission, vision and goals. The primary responsibility is to ensure efficient and effective operations of inclusive Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services that support and enhance the personal and professional development of students in their curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular experience.
 

The Director must demonstrate excellent team-oriented leadership; commitment to collaboration; financial and administrative management skills; cultural competence and sensitivity; ability to work well with and engage diverse groups to meet the equitable needs of all community members; and experience and ability to inspire, motivate, and communicate effectively with professional and student staff, Student Affairs colleagues, other campus partners, and MSU Denver students. The Director participates in long-range planning that contributes to student development and assumes other responsibilities as directed by the Assistant Vice President for Health & Well-being.

Responsibilities

Supervision of Departmental Areas & Staff - 30%
  • Administer all professional staff recruitment, hiring, retention efforts, supervision, evaluations and termination decisions.
  • Oversee professional development activities.
  • Identify and obtain appropriate software to maintain records of memberships, sales, facility use and program attendance.
  • Analyze member data and activity for engagement benchmarking and tren.
  • Supervise and collaborate with professional staff to ensure implementation of inclusive on-campus, remote and virtual Campus Recreation programs, events and services.
  • Fitness: group fitness, personal training, adaptive fitness (providing access to recreation and fitness programs to individuals with disabilities), fitness education, CPR/AED/First-Aid certification
  • Outdoor Pursuits: Outdoor Pursuits Center management, outdoor adventures, CityScapes, climbing wall management and programs, Adventure Leadership Program (ALP), Pathfinder, equipment rentals, van management
  • Sports: club sports, intramural leagues, open recreation, equipment loans, racquetball and squash court management, development of esports
  • Facility Operations: scheduling, training, preventative maintenance, risk management, equipment/supply analysis, capital improvements, major equipment purchases
  • Marketing and Outreach: departmental marketing, engagement and communications; develop and lead strategy of web and social media presences; connection and collaboration with internal and external partners to promote and advance our mission
Student Development - 20%
  • Work closely with Human Resources, Payroll, Financial Aid and the Classroom to Career Hub to ensure student employment positions are properly listed, advertised, filled and supervised.
  • Offer support to student employees to further develop their soft, hard and life-long transferable skills.
  • Collaborate with on-campus departments to educate student staff and participants about their available resources.
  • Lead semi-annual all-staff trainings.
Finance & Human Resources - 10%
  • Develop, administer, and is fiscally responsible for a $1.65 million annual operating budget.
  • Responsible for multiple campus recreation accounts, budget allocations, budget reporting, and revenue-generating activities.
  • Maintain a complete understanding of the balance of student fees required for operations; rental and program revenue; and expenses for facilities operations, compensation and benefits, equipment replacement, annual bond debt, and program expenses.
  • Manage Campus Recreation budgets and provide accountability by reviewing monthly financial statements and approving department expenditures.
  • Responsible for overseeing and collaborating with Human Resources specific to personnel management and policy adherence.
  • Work with University Advancement to secure and process financial donations for Campus Recreation and Club Sports teams, in addition to coordinating fundraiser efforts such as 50/50 raffle sales at Rockies games and crowdfunding pages.
Strategic Planning & Assessment - 10%
  • Establish and implement short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for Campus Recreation.
  • Develop and execute departmental strategic planning, data informed policy development and assessment of student learning outcomes and the student success initiative.
  • Monitor and evaluate operational effectiveness, and effect changes required for improvement.
  • Oversee program assessment and strategic planning, in support of the University's strategic plan and mission.
Marketing, Outreach & Trends - 10%
  • Promote Campus Recreation by overseeing a marketing plan, departmental publications, webpages and a social media presence.
  • Ensure that departmental programs are accessible and utilized by students that mirror the University's diverse student population.
  • Understand which students utilize services and address any identified inequities.
  • Be responsive to trends in the field of recreational services, higher education, and technology to support relevant services.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading.
  • Build and sustain strong partnerships with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, UCM, University Advancement and external organizations to advance the mission of Campus Recreation.
  • Attend professional conferences, development courses and trainings as required by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Assistant Vice President for Health & Well-being.
Committees & Collaboration - 10%
  • Represent Campus Recreation on the Student Affairs Leadership Team and PE Building Stakeholders group.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees and task forces that promote the educational development and leadership skills of students.
  • Assist with the development of a full and positive campus life by collaborating with other departments within Student Affairs including, but not limited to, the Health Center at Auraria, the Center for Equity and Student Achievement, specifically the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion, Orientation, Transfer and Reengagement, the Center for Urban Education, the Student Advisory Council and the Classroom to Careers Hub.
  • Collaborate regularly with relevant academic departments to ensure that student learning in Campus Recreation programs complements curricular opportunities.
  • Conduct contract negotiations as it relates to facility rentals, software and equipment needs of the department.
  • Cultivate and maintain excellent working relationships across the University, the tri-institutional campus, and within the broader Denver-metro community.
  • Work with Alumni and Friends to maintain relevant tags on alumni profiles for future correspondences and donation requests.
     
Facility Maintenance - 5%
  • Oversee current and future Campus Recreation facilities by supervising staff and providing accountable financial management.
  • Work with the Director of Planning, Design and Construction and AHEC Project Management on capital improvement projects, not limited to design, scope and vendor vetting
  • Ensure necessary renovations, maintenance, and capital improvement projects are completed.
  • Plan for continued growth as needed.
     
Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least five years of experience leading or managing a recreation/fitness/sport program
  • At least four years of experience supervising staff in a related setting (recreation or higher education)
  • Experience working in a higher education recreation program
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Sport/Recreation Management, Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field
  • Budget management experience
  • Experience identifying, managing and mitigating risk in recreation programs
  • Demonstrated experience working cooperatively with diverse groups and willingness to engage in professional development activities to improve understanding and effectiveness of working with culturally different populations and individuals with diverse social identities
  • Capital planning/improvement project experience (i.e. experience with feasibility, program design or master planning projects and or oversight of construction design)
  • Experience marketing recreation or related programs
  • Experience managing customer relation management (CRM) or recreation management software applications
  • Knowledge of local and national issues, trends and best practice standards in Campus Recreation
  • Experience working with data collection outcome measures to assess services and to promote quality improvement
  • Experience effectively communicating information in a clear and understandable manner, verbally, using technology and in writing within a diverse university community, while being mindful of accessibility and University style guides
  • Experience managing a complex organization working with many different constituencies in the institution in a way that serves the best interests of the students
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Work Hours
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week

Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $64,500 - $107,600.

This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
