Academic Program Manager & Advisor
Job Description
The Department of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) at Virginia Tech is seeking an excellent candidate to serve as an Academic Program Manager and Advisor. This position is responsible for providing administrative support to the Science, Technology, and Society graduate programs, including the Master and PhD programs at the Blacksburg and the National Capital Region campuses. The role entails assisting the department chair and graduate program director in managing admissions operations including recruitment, application processes, and orientation programs, and graduate student advising, including managing progress to degree reporting and establishing plans of study. This position will also collaborate with the undergraduate program coordinator to advise undergraduate students in the minors of this program, and manages all scheduling and timetabling for academic programs. This position also maintains basic communications activities related to departmental and academic activities. The Program Manager and Advisor prioritizes and maintains a service-based attitude and promotes a sense of community for students, faculty, and staff. This role requires significant initiative and an ability to solve complex problems within the department's operations through the development of policies, procedures, and technological solutions.
Required Qualifications
Previous experience in academic advising; strong computer skills; advanced skills in MS Word and Excel; excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize workload; ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse multicultural environment; basic website and social media experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with DARs system; previous experience working with Registrar's Office for class scheduling, DARs, etc.; experience with large relational databases, such as Banner and Slate. Graphic design experience.
