Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Physics starting 2025-26
The Department of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to support the Physics degree program starting August 2025.
Requirements include a Ph.D. degree or equivalent degree in physics or related discipline by the time of appointment and evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in undergraduate teaching. Outstanding teaching and enthusiasm for delivering individualized attention and support to undergraduate students is a significant criterion for success at Rose-Hulman; we are looking for candidates who embrace the mission and vision of Rose-Hulman to join our collegial team. The department and the Institute place a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates who can further broaden and enhance the educational experience of our students are also encouraged to apply.
Essential job functions include teaching approximately 12 credits/15 contact hours per term, advising and mentoring students, continued professional development, and providing service to the department, Institute, and professional communities. The successful candidate will use effective approaches to teach introductory physics courses and labs, as well as upper division courses in physics, including lab courses. The candidate will receive mentoring from experienced faculty colleagues to support professional growth and can develop and teach upper-level electives in their area of expertise. It is expected that the successful candidate will pursue activities that provide valuable research and educational experiences to undergraduates and Masters students. Please visit our course catalog at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/academics/course-catalog/current/.
The successful candidate will join a 21-person team dedicated to providing undergraduate major programs in physics, nanoengineering, and optical engineering, along with an M.S. degree in optical engineering. The department also supports several minors and certificates, including a semiconductor certificate, astronomy minor, theoretical physics minor and a solid-state physics/materials science minor. Active research programs and interests include material science, magneto-optics, x-ray spectroscopy and diffraction, medical imaging, semiconductors, quantum physics and optics. In addition, the department operates two observatories, the Oakley Observatory on campus and the Oakley Southern Sky Observatory in Australia as well as a state-of-the-art cleanroom (MiNDS Lab).
Review of applications will start November 13, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a current resume or curriculum vitae, a cover letter that summarizes teaching and research objectives at a primarily undergraduate institution, a 1-2 page teaching philosophy that includes evidence of, or potential for teaching effectiveness, a statement of professional development/research objectives involving undergraduate students, and a diversity statement that shows evidence for inclusive pedagogical practices, collaborative mindset, and cultural fluency.
