The Department of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to support the NanoEngineering degree program starting August 2025.

Requirements include a Ph.D. degree in engineering by the time of appointment and evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in undergraduate teaching; degree focusing on semiconductors, microfabrication, nanotechnology, or materials engineering is preferred. Outstanding teaching and enthusiasm for delivering individualized attention and support to undergraduate students is a significant criterion for success at Rose-Hulman; we are looking for candidates who embrace the mission and vision of Rose-Hulman to join our collegial team. The department and the Institute place a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates who can further broaden and enhance the educational experience of our students are also encouraged to apply.

Essential job functions include teaching approximately 12 credits/15 contact hours per term, advising and mentoring students, continued professional development, and providing service to the department, Institute, and professional communities. The successful candidate will use effective approaches to teach introductory physics courses and labs, as well as upper division courses in nanoengineering, including lab courses in the cleanroom. The candidate will receive mentoring from experienced faculty colleagues to support professional growth and can develop and teach upper-level electives in their area of expertise. Please visit our course catalog at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/academics/course-catalog/current/ for descriptions of our existing courses.

The successful candidate will join a team of 21 members dedicated to delivering undergraduate degree programs in physics, nanoengineering, and optical engineering, as well as an M.S. program in optical engineering. The department also supports several minors and certificates, including a semiconductor certificate, astronomy minor, and a solid-state physics/materials science minor. Active research programs include semiconductors, nanotechnology, and photonics. In addition, nanoengineering houses the primary users of a cleanroom facility for undergraduate teaching and research in nanotechnology, including e-beam lithography, atomic layer deposition, and nanoimprint lithography along with other standard cleanroom tools. Undergraduate courses in the areas of semiconductor devices, nanotechnology, MEMS, and silicon photonics are taught in the cleanroom. More information on the facilities can be found at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/academics/degrees-and-programs/cross-cutting-programs/minds/index.html.

Review of applications will start November 13, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a current resume or curriculum vitae, a cover letter that summarizes teaching and research objectives at a primarily undergraduate institution, a 1-2 page teaching philosophy that includes evidence of, or potential for teaching effectiveness, a statement of professional development/research objectives involving undergraduate students, and a diversity statement that shows evidence for inclusive pedagogical practices, collaborative mindset, and cultural fluency.
