Assistant or Associate Professor, Urban Planning (Open Specialization)
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida State University seeks candidates for a tenure line faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin August 2025. Rank will be determined based on qualifications. Applicants must hold (or be expected to receive prior to August 2025) a doctorate in urban and regional planning, or an equivalent degree in a related field, and must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research.
The successful candidate for this position will either 1) focus on one or more of our existing specializations in International Planning, Real Estate and Economic Development, Neighborhood Planning and Community Development, or Environmental Planning or 2) take the lead in developing a new specialization focused on their own expertise. We invite candidates who use a range of quantitative and qualitative methods including participatory action research and community-engaged research.
The successful candidate will teach one or more courses of their own design that highlight their expertise and advance our existing curriculum. Depending on their interests and capabilities, they may also teach existing courses in one or more of our graduate specializations, our graduate core curriculum, or our undergraduate minor.
The successful candidate must also demonstrate that they will contribute to our commitment to multi-culturalism, equity, and cultural competency.
Administratively housed within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the Department includes 10 faculty and 90 graduate students and offers a PAB-accredited professional master's degree, a Ph.D., and an undergraduate minor. The Department offers joint graduate pathways in Planning/Demography, Planning/International Affairs, Planning/Geographic Information Science, Planning/Law, Planning/Public Administration, and Planning/Public Health. The PhD program has research emphases in planning for an aging population; healthy and resilient communities; sustainable communities; transportation, land use, and accessibility; collaborative and participatory governance; community neighborhood change; and human settlements and institutions in the context of global change. College and university partners include the Center for Disaster Risk Policy, the Pepper Institute for Aging and Public Policy, and the Center for Demography and Population Health.
Founded in 1965, we have awarded more than 1,800 graduate degrees. The Department also includes the award-winning Mark and Marianne Barnebey Planning and Development Lab and Studio, an entity designed to provide planning services to communities in Florida, the southeastern U.S., and Latin America.
