Position Description

The Department of Music at Spelman College is seeking a dynamic and experienced part-time instructor to teach Music Theory and Musicianship I. This position offers an exciting opportunity to guide students in their foundational study of music theory within a supportive, inclusive academic environment.
Music Theory and Musicianship I is the first semester of a two-semester sequence required for all music majors and minors. This four-credit course integrates both music theory and musicianship. The music theory component (Monday-Wednesday) focuses on tonal harmony, harmonic analysis, and voice leading, while the musicianship class (Thursday) aims to develop sight-reading and aural skills.
This course will be taught in-person.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
Teach Music Theory and Musicianship I, meeting in person Monday through Thursday from 12:00 to 12:50 pm.
Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments, homework, and assessments.
Participate in departmental activities, contributing to a vibrant and collaborative academic community.
Encourage student engagement and support academic success.
Departmental Engagement:
Demonstrate a commitment to the values of a liberal arts education and actively engage in departmental events.
Professional Development:
Stay current with pedagogical practices and engage in professional development to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Qualifications

A master's degree in music theory or a closely related field.
Experience teaching music theory and sight-reading at the undergraduate level.
Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear and constructive feedback to students.
