Posting Number: req20752
Department: Lunar and Planetary Laboratory
Location: Main Campus
Address: Tucson, AZ USA
Position Highlights
The Lunar & Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate I in the field of planetary atmospheres. Efforts from this postdoctoral associate will emphasize developing convection-resolving models and applications of these tools to sub-stellar objects. The postdoctoral associate will also co-develop a computational methods training program delivered to undergraduate researchers from historically underrepresented groups.
Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please click here.
Duties & Responsibilities
- The successful applicant will:
- conduct original research related to modeling resolved convection
in planetary atmospheres - explore how an improved understanding of vertical
mixing influences models of planetary evolution - collaboratively build
and teach a Python training seminar
Responsibilities will include developing
three-dimensional atmospheric dynamics models and leading comparisons of
results from these tools to open-source, one-dimensional atmospheric models.
Subsequent efforts will emphasize improving approaches to modeling the time
evolution of gaseous exoplanets, especially sub-Neptune-like exoplanets.
Additional responsibilities will include co-designing and co-delivering a
Python training seminar for early-career undergraduate researchers. The
successful applicant will also participate in team meetings, presentation of
results at conferences, and preparation of original scientific research
manuscripts.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in the field of astronomy, astrophysics, planetary
science, or similar upon start date. - Experience developing computationally-intensive scientific
software. - Experience modeling dynamical processes in planetary
atmospheres.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience modeling vertical mixing and/or circulation in planetary atmospheres.
- Experience modeling sub-stellar climates and/or thermal structures.
- Experience developing and/or using sub-stellar evolutionary models.
- Experience instructing undergraduate students, preferably in numerical methods.
- Experience leading peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
Paper copies of the Reports can be obtained by contacting the University Compliance Office at cleryact@arizona.edu.
